Just about IT By Ainsley Hanes After an absurd amount of research, this guy came up in the newspaper on special, I'd never heard of it because it was new, threw caution to the wind and bought it. And found this slightly too tall, a bit too plain whiter shade-o-beige bad boy to be just this side of perfect. Here's the problem: we all want an all-in-one that does the dishes, changes the baby and serves us martinis promptly at 7. And if you've got the space and the money, it's doable. But the lesson for the rest of us is to spread the love a little and let one machine do the color, keep the ancient fax for the increasingly rare times you use it and concentrate on finding one workhorse to do your printing, copying and scanning -- which is what yer mod-ren small business is all about. Those three jobs are handled with astonishing speed and grace on the D550. It sits on your desk, just a bit too high for my taste, causing you to either have to half stand up to view the 5-line control panel or, if you're a little crafty, position a business card-size pocket mirror on the ledge so you can see the printout without a stretch (yep, in reverse). To love: the beast goes from dead silent to first print in seven screamin' seconds. Really. So much fun you spend the first day or two just idly pressing print and counting mississippi's just to watch it again. Then one page per 2 secs without a shudder. Gorgeous. Scanner works from your computer software -- straight-forward, pdf to desktop, just what the client ordered, so you can then attach it to an email and forsake ye ole fax machine. Copier -- simple and flawless. Here's the other amazing fact: It likes manual feed. Show me another printer that can look you in the eye and say THAT. Copies are -- for the most part -- straight, error free, non-eaten, non-jiggered. There are real paper guides and you just push a sheet in and print. And the paper try holds -- gasp -- half a ream. AND doesn't have to be pulled out and opened up to restock. A devilishly simple clear plastic cover folds back and you plop the next inch of rag in. Takes 10 secs and nothing close by gets moved or falls to the floor. I expect this guy to last and continue to deliver (ya hear me boa?), as my other Canons have. So move over, Brotha, there's a new gun in tay-own... 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. USE THE CUSTOM MODE TO INSTALL By Lee Riley This has become a very good multifunction copier since having first installed it in the FAST TRACK mode. It would not respond to my computer's commands. After a lot of frustration and head scratching, I uninstalled everything in my computer that had anything to do with it. I then reinstalled it in the CUSTOM mode. Works fine now. A great value. By Phyllis Rhodes I recently purchased this printer in an effort to free up more space in my home office. I replaced my laser printer, scanner and fax with this single compact unit and couldn't be happier. As others have mentioned, the duplex printing feature is a MAJOR plus in my opinion - a feature that they've seemed to include as a "freebie" and adds major points over competitors. The quick start guide was really simple and I was up and running in a matter of minutes. A super quiet machine when not in use (thanks to the Energy Saving feature), I've used the printing features and the results are timely, crisp, clean pages with seemingly excellent paper handling (no jams so far). It's got many more print options (2 on 1 page, 4 on 2 pages which is really 4 on 1 with the duplex option) and a ton of other cool features and capabilities that aren't listed in the product description. I have sent and received faxes without a problem. Copying is just like using the larger machines: just lift the cover or use the document feeder to copy originals. I haven't scanned anything yet, so I can't comment on that particular functionality, but the manual mentions scanning to PDF which is what I really need and like. Size is truly relative - It is a bit larger (height and width) than my old laser printer (a Samsung); but does 4 times more work and its footprint is definitely smaller than the three units I replaced! For less than $200 with free shipping, it's solved my space problems and exceeded my expectations regarding functionality and quality. A great deal, imo. I highly recommend!! 75 of 78 people found the following review helpful. Wow, this is the way to go. By bayareakirk Awesome: 1. Very quiet. 2. Goes in to hibernate quickly to save energy and bursts back to life instantly when needed. 3. Great print quality. 4. Does it all (except for color)including fax, copy, scan, and duplex printing. 5. Duplex printing saves a lot of resources (paper and money). 6. Most of the settings and buttons are user friendly. Not so awesome: 1. The manual that comes with it is nice and easy to read and use, but skips too many "advanced features". For advanced features you must look at the online .pdf guides. 2. Even with the advanced guide, it is not immediately obvious to me how to set up the machine so it will screen calls as phone or fax. It wants to answer all calls as a fax machine. I need to experiment more with the available (but confusing) settings that should fix this. I like having a do it all printer but also realized I no longer need or want color. Here's why: 1. Printing photos at home is not what the marketing would like us to believe. Sending photos to Kodak or Shutterfly (or any online photo printer) is cheaper, of better quality, and of more archival quality than printing at home. It also offers more choices of print size and paper quality and so forth. It's just not quite as fast. Email the photos in and have them in a few days or a week at most. 2. Color inkjet printers do not work well long enough. They frustrate me as contributing too greatly to our throw away society. It is cheaper to buy a new printer than to buy ink, print heads and other needed repairs that come up after a year or two of use. This Canon is great and it is unreal that it lists at such a low price for the quality and functions you get. 58 of 61 people found the following review helpful. Nice Machine - Happy So Far By J. Kim I bought this printer after I found that 1) fewer and fewer places carry toner for my Samsung SF-555P Multi-function printer and 2) I really need duplex printing. This is a brand new model as of Novermber 2006. I had bought and returned a HP Laserjet 3055 multi-function unit, after

Gabriel Every year we rotate out about 250 printers of a total around 700 printers. That means we are on a three year rotation schedule. The batch going out this year is some pitiful Brother printers that are only one and one-half to two years old. The ones we are keeping past their rotation time are some HP1012 and 1022 printers that have performed flawlessly. Their replacements are these 1505s. These printers are simply well-suited to their jobs. They are shared at every installation where we use them. They have been fault free so far and most likely will be if they mirror our experience over the last 20 years with HP printers. They are not network printers or meant for heavy production use. For that you have to expect to spend a few more dollars. Based on our experience here with these printers I bought one for home and it is performing flawlessly. I would recommend this printer to anyone who needs an everyday, reliable, easy on the combustibles printer. 21 of 23 people found the following review helpful. Nice replacement for 1022/1022N By MJ I have bought several 1505's and 1505N's and overall had a great experience with them. They are the replacement entry-level Laser monochrome printer for the 1022/1022N. I like them better because they print faster than 1022 (in my experience) and have a power button on the front. I did receive a bad 1505 but I emailed Amazon and they overnighted me a new printer and emailed me a pre-paid RMA label. Couldn't have been easier - Amazon rocks! Great little printer! (If you need something a little heftier with HP, I would look at the LJ1320 and so on...) 30 of 35 people found the following review helpful. Do NOT buy this printer to use with a Mac, unless you're in the market for a lot of frustration! By Technophile HP claims this printer is compatible with Mac OSX. Don't believe it. There are major problems printing from Word on a Mac, a problem of which HP is fully aware but claims that downloading the latest version of the driver from their website will fix it. In my recent and very frustrating experience (3 calls so far to HP Tech Support), it does not. My Laserjet is still not performing consistently (sometimes it prints, sometimes it doesn't, and sometimes it print horizontal lines instead of text), &, having exhausted all the "fixes" HP is able to provide, I'm about to ship it back to Amazon. Screen print shop owner -- Very pleased By Mark Carson We own a silk screen printing business and demand quality and accuracy. This printer (HP LJ 5200) fits the bill. The 5200 is one fast puppy! Toner displacement is good (heavy and very black) which is great for printing both positives and negatives. Nice sized paper tray holds 250+ sheets & is capable of large format printing (14"x17"). Overall, with the machine I have no complaints. Cons: Very heavy - 45 lbs Quick setup instructions is vague Users manual is on CD only Tech support is in Costa Rica - very helpful but difficult for this Gringo to understand! Over all we are very satisfied and hope to get many years use from this purchase. 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Outstanding Laser Printer For 11X17 Card Stock By M. Kreffel I received my HP 5200 yesterday, and with a bit of labor (It is a very heavy printer) placed it into my home office area. The printed documentation is sparse, so you'll need to browse the PDF manual located on the CD. I quickly found what I needed: how to set the output to Pro Resolution, the highest, and how to insert large 11"X17" paper stock; the 5200 has a front manual load tray above the enclosed bottom paper tray. Within minutes I had installed the drivers and hooked up the machine, opened a file in Adobe Illustrator I had designed especially for 11X17, and selected the 5200 in the Printer Menu. I hit Print, and ZIP!, less than a second later the full 11X17 flew out of the 5200! And the print is incredible; the text was exceptionally crisp and the black art image was super rich and extremely sharp. Exactly what I was hoping for, and expecting for what I paid. As an illustrator I plan on using this printer to set up graphic novel pages of text, art and frames, which I'll then print out to pencil on and ink final art. Then I'll scan on my Epson GT 15000 11X17 for publishing. HP says to expect printing of 10,000 pages on a single toner cartridge, but I expect less using 11X17 Bristol card stock. That's still a lot of printing from one cartridge. I highly recommend this product if you are creating graphic art or architectural projects. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Bad Luck, Bad Printer By Bahzon As luck would have it. I purchased this printer and was only able to get 40 prints from it before the internal cpu for the printer died. The repair and return policies from HP were not a satisfactory solution for the dollar amount of this purchase. HP's offered solution was to send out a refurbished unit to replace my new unit with me paying half the cost of shipping. That sure makes the 40 prints I got from the original unit pretty pricey not to mention I would be the proud owner of a refurbished unit that I have no idea where it has been. The other option I have been given is to wait for several weeks for a repair center to get the part needed and repair the unit. In the mean time I have no printer to achieve the goal this printer was purchased for. The falty printer and the non-acceptable return policy of HP makes this purchase a risky buy. Consider your options on alternative products before commiting on this one. I am in some kind of eternal "call you back" loop with HP if any acceptable solution is offered I will be back to append my comments. See all 4 customer reviews...

Reynolds This is a great printer--I give it 5 stars because it works AS ADVERTISED. This is HIGH PRAISE compared to the 6 other printers I've owned over the last 5 years (1 Brother laser, 1 Samsung, 4 HP's; only the Brother laser is still in use; to be fair, one of the HP inkjets still functions, but I have chosen to stop paying $60 every 4 months for ink). In looking for a replacement color printer, my search criteria were high-capacity ink cartridges, fax capability, ADF (auto document feeder) for scanning, and networkability. (Ideally, installation would be automated and wouldn't load my computer with megabytes of software that I didn't want...sigh). I first looked at the Brother MFC-490CW which, on sale, would have been 60% of the price of the MFC-5890CN. Second, I looked at the HP J6480 AIO. I am at the end of my rope with HP printers (I could write pages on this) but it looked at it for 2 reasons: (1) 2 different sales people at 2 different stores said over and over that the HP had much better image/print quality than the Brothers and (2) it does have a high capacity ink cartridge option (74XL, 75 XL). Then I looked at the MFC-5890CN which I decided to buy. I did consider the Brother MFC-6490CW, but it would have been an extra $50 to $100 dollars and it's HUGE (too big for my work space). I think the Brother MFC-490CW is an awesome printer. It has good ink capacity (LC61 cartridges) but does not work with the high-capacity cartridges (LC65 series 25% more expensive for double ink) that it's big brothers can use (5890CN and 6490CW). I REALLY WISH that the MFC-5890 I purchased included the 6x4 photo paper bypass tray that the MFC-490CW has (my only disappointment with it! maybe Brother will offer an accessory tray with that feature). It also has built-in wireless networking, which sounded like a big deal but, as I discuss below didn't add anything--I am using the FULL capabilities of the MFC-5890CN wirelessly through my wireless router as I explain below. I decided to go with the MFC-5890CN over the MFC-490CW mainly so that I could use the LC65 high-capacity ink. Printing on 11x17 paper may also be useful to me. (It can NOT scan 11x17 documents as another review said. I guess that person never looked at it in the store as it's obvious that the scanner glass is only 8.5 by 11 and not 11 by17 like the MFC-6490CW.) It also has double the warranty period, 2 years, and double the duty cycle--I hope this means it really will last longer but only time will tell. I looked at the HP J6480 AIO very carefully. The price was the same as the MFC-5890CN. This was the only similar HP printer that I found that had high-capacity ink. It has built-in wireless networking. It does NOT have a color LCD screen. To test the image quality, I went to the store and made color copies of the same test documents (pictures my children made) with the HP J6480 and the MFC-5890CN, both on highest quality. The Brother MFC-5890CN was very much better than the HP. Do the test yourself--my Staples in town has all the printers plugged in and loaded with paper. The only benefit of the HP J6480 is an automatic two-sided printing feature. However, this isn't too great a feature with inkjet as there is a pause to "let the ink" dry before it flips the page. Again, I tried this at the store--it was really annoying b/c if you only copy 1 side, the printed page pops out, the printer status screen says "Please wait, ink drying" or something like that, a few seconds pass, it sucks the page back in to flip it over, and then you can have your copy. If I want to duplex to save paper, I'll just use my laser. So I bought the MFC-5890CN. I have had several nice surprises since. First, it prints GREAT! photos using the ink provided. I bought the Brother "innobella" 4x6 glossy photo paper ($5 for 20 sheets), put it in the paper tray, put the memory

Pentecost Choosing an LED based printer over a laser based printer is a personal choice. Each technology uses a completely different dither pattern. Laser printers tend to produce a more "feathered" dither - which some people like and think looks better. LED printers produce a more "crisp" dither more akin to offset printing - which I personally prefer. The C5500n is a great LED based printer. I purchased mine as a floor model close out from a local office supply store at a discount. It replaced my current C5200n. The toner used in the C5500n and C5800ldn is different from that used in the previous generation 5100/5200/5300 units. Colors appear a bit more vivid with the new toner. My first print job was 600 fliers for a silent auction at church - each w/ 16 photos and descriptions. The printing took about 30 minutes including loading more paper. Everyone was impressed with the fliers. I compared the printouts from the C5200n and the C5500n and noticed the standard dither is a bit finer on the C5500n but still noticeable. (The standard on the C5500n is similar to the "best" quality on the C5200n.) Don't buy this printer to print digital photos for the relatives. Keep a nice inkjet for that. DO buy this printer for anything you want to print in color on plain paper and have look nice. Things like fliers, menus, brochures, etc. are the sweet spot for these kinds of printers. 7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Very Good Printer By Chien Yu Chi This is a very good LED printer. We had it at work for 2 years now and it hardly had any problems. The only problem we had was that the component failed and it couldn't print for a while. Oki did send us a replacement in two days. We print averagely 5,000 pages a month, so it only failed once, which is already a very good record to us. Overall, we are very happy with the printer because it prints excellent quality black and white copies. The color prints are also very nice. We especially like the "glossy" finish this printer has. It makes everything we print looks very visually pleased and expensive. We purchased this printer from Staples and used to buy the supplies from Office Depot. Amazon sometimes have the drums and toners in stock, so we also buy the supplies from Amazon to save some costs. The average cost for printing per page is considerably lower than a lot of laser printers out there. 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. I love this printer! By L. Hunt I recently bought the Okidata C5500 to replace the dying $300 color laser printer I had. I was happy with the old one, but came across the Oki for a price that couldn't be beat (less than $250 at a closeout sale) and decided to go with it. I am so happy I did. The price for the consumables is very similar to what I had been paying for the cheaper printer, so the cost to operate it is much the same, but the quality is way better! I use the printer to print our weekly bulletins at church and also the color brochures for our small business. The color is bright and crisp, text is clear and easy to read. Would I buy it again? In a heartbeat! Would I blink at paying the full retail price for it? No, not since I've seen it in action and put it through it's paces myself. It is well worth the price difference between it and the one I had previously. I am very happy with it! See all 10 customer reviews...

Good hardware, Lousy software By Jason Whittington This device is basically identical to the MF4370dn which is heavily (and positively) reviewed. As near as I can tell there are three differences between the two units: 1) The D480 is beige, the MF4370 black 2) The D480 has am improved document feeder 3) The D480 has more complete duplexing than the MF4370. I was actually alerted to #3 by an Amazon review. You can put a stack of two-sided documents into the feeder and produce a set of two-sided duplicates. According to the Amazon reviewer the MF4370 will take two-sided docs in the feeder but can only produce single-sided docs in response. I haven't tried this with a thick stack of documents but onesie/twosie stuff seems to work great, at least with plain copy paper. I tried duplex-copying a mortgage statement printed on thick paper and the feeder choked on it. Copying is fast, quiet and sharp. I'm delighted by it, actually. Duplexing is really simple. Manually scanning two different sheets onto one two-sided document or just copying a two-sided document are both very easy. The biggest limitation is the size of the platen. I didn't think I'd even notice this but if you're used to throwing down a book or something of a full-size copy machine you'll feel a bit cramped. If you want to scan oversized stuff you're of out of luck, but that's true of every machine in this price range. The D480 seems to be a perfectly capable printer and supports full duplexing right from software. I do most of my printing to an HP 3600dn and don't see that changing except for printing music, where duplexing will be really nice to have. Network printing was really easy to set up. Scanning is where this device falls a bit flat, and that's due almost entirely to the software, not the hardware. Even thought it has a Vista logo on the box it still relies on TWAIN drivers so it doesn't integrate with "Scanners and Cameras" under Vista. The software they ship to scan with is hokey but seems to work. I guess I can hope that Canon will ship updated drivers but I won't hold my breath. I am a little peeved at MSFT for letting Canon put a Vista logo on the box. Network scanning is a joke on this device (same as with MF4370). The process for doing this is just stupid, and the file transfer is ungodly slow. I was hoping to just pop some docs into the ADF and press a button and have them show up but you can't really do it in the backgrond and the file transfer times are godawful slow. This is partly due to the size of the data but not completely - it's REALLY REALLY SLOW. To give you an idea it took something like a minute or two to transfer an 88KB image. That's KILOBYTES. I think the scanner must send a raw dump over the network which is processed on the host machine. In any case, it's tricky to set up and basically unusable. Note to Canon: "Scan to USB Flash Drive" would be a far better feature. On the bright side there is support for scanning several pages from the ADF into a single (or multiple) PDFs. There is some sort of OCR software but I haven't tried to use it yet. We hope to scan bills and whatnot and toss the originals - I guess I'll see how well that works out. I haven't tried the faxing capability. Having a halfway decent ADF will be a godsend for sending contracts or NDAs around, but I'll probably rely more on scanning to PDF than actually faxing. I never receive faxes - I use online services like eFax. Finally I have to ding the awful documentation. It's really quite bad - I had to call tech support to try to figure out network scanning and found out that even though I didn't want to use USB scanning I still had to do a USB install. Oops. If you want to do anything non-trivial you're going to be experimenting and cursing a bit. Canon's tech support was actually quite good, but better docs would have saved them the cost of the call. So, as the title says, the hardware is

By David Freis I had the Brother 2140 Lazer printer before I purchased this one and that was a fantastic printer that served me well. With the good luck I had with the 2140 Brother I figured I would give this one a try. I was done with all of my heavy duty scanning and no longer needed a dedicated scanner for intense photo scanning, so I looked for an all in one by Brother and found this one. From setup, to printing and finally scanning...the product performs on all levels and I could not be any happier. The only negative I have in regard to this product is the size. It is one heck of a monster AIO but that will not keep me from still giving it the 5 star rating. I have a dedicated table for my AIO and router so it is no issue for me but if you are cramped for space you had better look at the dimensions carefully. 14 of 15 people found the following review helpful. Great Printer By D. V. Handley I've had this printer for a few months and love it. The only attribute I ranked lower than 5 stars is the noise it makes when 'awake'. When not actively in use, it goes to sleep and is totally quiet. 9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Paper jam all the time By luckybunny I purchased this multi-function copier and am happy to have a scanner in my office but it does not handle checks very well. I get "paper jammed" sign all the time even when there is nothing jammed inside. I often have to open up the printer and get the printer cartridge out so that "paper jammed" sign will go away and it is pain in a butt. Another thing is that paper does not go straight in. I hate to have crooked printed checks. See all 14 customer reviews...

Wireless Printing Is a Miracle By Stephen Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/RCA4HM7AVDQBD I waited a long time for a wireless printer, and the HP 6988 does not disappoint. I followed the setup instructions without difficulty, and had the printer running in less than 10 minutes. Installation on my wife's laptop was even faster. Printing is fast, and the quality of text is good enough for routine document printing. Color printing is also good, though not stunning. As you can see from the video, print time is within seconds, and on my network, indistinguishable from a wired connection. There's little printer "rocking", and the 6988 is quiet. As for HP's bundled software, I haven't had any issues with it, as I simply hit the "print" button and the printer works. Once you have a wireless printer, you'll never go back to a wired connection. Everyone in range of the printer can print a document. The printer can be placed anywhere within the house, with the only cord being the power supply. Wireless printing has been "in the offing" for a long time, and the 6988 finally makes it practical, affordable, and easy. 64 of 67 people found the following review helpful. Initially Very Good - But Blindsided By Unrepairable, Fragile Part By R. Sprague We bought this printer (in its initial iteration as a 6980) almost two years ago and it worked fine for a while - wireless was nice and overall quality seemed good. As noted in another review, it plays well with Linux and MacOS; we use Mac, Linux in a couple of flavors, as well as Windows at home and had no problems using the printer with any of them. It was not necessary to install the bloated client software in Windows to make the printer work properly. Recently we began to get an error on the black ink cartridge; I also noticed that it seemed to feel different going in. Changing the cartridge for a new one did not make the error go away. In spite of the error it appeared to print black just fine, so I continued to use it while researching the problem. I now believe that although it printed black, it was using the color cartridge to mix black and using ink at a great rate. Very expensive! HP tells me that the black cartridge cradle is defective (a tiny plastic tab that holds the spring has broken and will not allow proper seating of the cartridge) and further says that this is not a repairable item! The only recourse offered was a replacement printer at a $79.95 price. This amounts to selling us a new printer at about Amazon retail price - not an ideal solution. This printer did not experience heavy use, and cartridges were always changed carefully. It has not been abused. I have examined the plastic tab in question and it looks very fragile to me - a design flaw? Perhaps it should have been made of stronger material or designed to be more substantial. I would not have purchased the printer had I known of this weakness in the design and the impossibility of repair. Have replaced this printer with another type. I don't recommend this printer, in spite of an otherwise apparently good design and good print performance. Look elsewhere! 31 of 33 people found the following review helpful. Perfect network printer for Linux & Windows home users By Jerone Young I'm just not sure what is up with the bad reviews. I don't seem to be seeing these issues. I bought this after much research. You see I primarily use Ubuntu Linux and I needed a wireless network printer that I could setup without the need of Windows or Mac. All you need is a web browser (so you could use wii or iphone if you really wanted). I'm coming from a terrible experience over the years of fighting with a linksys wps54g printer server hooked up to my old Deskjet 932c (it has not been fun). Way to go HP! You don't need any specific OS with this printer! You just plug it in via ethernet and if you press the "report" button it will print out it's ip

We use a number of different types of printers in our business and this is the best of bunch. We have an all Mac office, and set-up was a breeze. We've networked it, and it also works well using the Mac's built in printer sharing over a wireless network. Color is great, with the right resolutions you get good photographic reproduction. We use it very effectively with brochures. One of the downsides is that accessories are expensive. Another is that in operation it is a little noisy. While in operation it makes a number of clunks and bumps, something to do with the switching between the various cartridges I think. All and all though a very good machine. And by the way shop around a little for toner. It can be had for a lot less then the list price. 86 of 90 people found the following review helpful. Can't get waste toner packs By Reader While I am very happy with the printer, Brother currently has a very serious supply problem. The printer takes something called a waste toner pack, or WT4CL. This is a little plastic thing that probably costs a dime to produce. The manual says that it lasts about 12,000 pages. After 3,900 pages, the printer's red light came on and it would not function. It seems that you can't get these waste toner packs anywhere in the U.S. Amazon doesn't have them, Staples doesn't have them, buy.com doesn't have them, etc. I did find them at amatteroffax.com, and paid for 2-day shipping, paid a premium over list price, and it took more than a week to receive. I also ordered 2 directly from Brother (after talking to them on the phone and wading through their phone trees...). I just received a snail-mail letter from Brother saying "We are temporarily out of stock. Please allow 4 - 6 weeks for delivery." Well, that is just great when your printer will not work without it. I have heard that you can empty it yourself if you are careful not to breathe the toner, but that will violate your warranty. So -- I love the printer, it prints quickly and the color looks great, but this supply glitch is ridiculous. How can I recommend a printer without supplies? 24 of 25 people found the following review helpful. Love My Printer!!! By Book Lover I did some research and felt that the Brother offered better value than the HP color laserjets. The toner seems quite expensive, but it comes with toner about half-full. The printer is very heavy, but once I got it out of the box, the step-by-step directions to remove the protective packaging were exquisitely easy to understand. (I am gratified that a company took the effort to really make directions logical and easily understood!) Installing the software was SIMPLE and I was up and running on my home wireless network very quickly. It spits out full-color as fast as a copy machine spits out paper. The quality is great for powerpoint slides, but not terrific for photographs. No more telling my kids they can't print their computer art because the inkjet takes 10 minutes -- we print a lot now! It does take one or two minutes to warm up from sleep mode. I have read reviews complaining that it is noisy when it comes out of sleep mode -- this is true, although since I have a basement home office it's not an issue for me. Excellent printer for home or small office By xilonic This is an excellent machine for a home or small office, here are pros and cons:- Good quality business prints and presentation documents; photo prints are average, somewhat grainy, color is not accurate out of the box - Excellent speed: prints one page of Google search in about 10-15 sec (from hitting Print button on the computer to picking up the sheet from the printer); when waking up from Deep Sleep mode printing takes a minute and a half; both color and black print equally fast - Can scan to network share without computer assistance: put documents into scanner, select scan and you PDF is waiting for you when you return to your desk; no need to install complicated software - Excellent power management: extremely low power usage and completely silent in Deep Sleep mode; instantly ready to scan; no need to turn off between use - Prints duplex but does not scan duplex - Toner and drums are separate, so you spend less since each lasts different number of pages (unlike most HP machines) - Scanner is fast but tilts pages somewhat, could be straighter - Since this is a laser printer, toner lasts indefinitely when not used (unlike ink-jets) 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Mostly for documents, charts and company resumes. Pros: -The color laser printout of images is very good even on a regular copy paper. You get better results using bright white photo paper. We have not to try it on a glossy paper yet but it can. But just don't compare it with an inkjet yet. -Printing color images even for a full page is amazingly fast. Approximately mere 5 seconds per full color page. -Compare to an inkjet, laser printers are much economical on ink. Inkjets are notorious for selling you the unit almost at a giveaway price and then selling a full set of replacement ink for the same price as the printer itself. -Multiplatform. Windows and Mac -Duplex printing. -It can print up to 11 x 17 paper. -The warm up time, around 15 secs is decent -The spec claims a duty cycle of 120,000 pages per month. We are printing around 5000 pages a month. Rooms for improvement: - Speed can be improve on the black and white printouts. - Can be made smaller. 28W x 25H x 23D is a huge footprint . - Price can go lower. 6 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Nightmare!!! By Andrew Lopucki This is certifiably the worse nightmare product I have ever bought. After paying $4000 for it 5 years ago, the printer began to have multiple print quality problems within the first year and half. From that point on it was one maddening experience with HP [lack of] support after another. We had to pay $30 at one point to get the quality pay-per-tech-service they required us to use; the guy freaking read the website trouble shooting guide to me while I screamed at him over the phone. We took the machine in to a certified repair technician and ended up replacing the fuser, image transfer kit, and all four toner cartridges even though they all showed more than 33% life left. Some problems were fixed but others not (it can't seem to print the same exact shade of tan across an entire page for instance, and there are intermittent black streaks that pop up.) We actually had to replace the transfer kit again after only 1 year and almost no use because it created large stripes of color along both ends of every print. HP told us that the color toner cartridges only have a life span of two years whether they are used or not and the fuser and image transfer kit are only under warrantee for six months after installation. That directly conflicts with what is printed on their website and on the materials that come with the parts. To sum up, we have spent over $6000 on a printer that only worked properly for 18 months (a couple thousand printed pages) and we have spent well over 12 hours of constant time on the phone with HP being treated like crap. In the most recent call I just wanted to buy the new transfer kit but the woman forced me to listen to pitch after pitch ranging from why not buy some paper to (if you can believe it) why not buy a new printer since this one is so old! I told her I wasn't very likely to ever buy anything from HP ever again. I earnestly recommend that you never buy anything from them either! To think I could've just printed my color prints at kinkos trouble free for about 1/3 the cost of what I've spent on this nightmare. 2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. I've had several laser printers before this one, and it's adequate in terms of its functions. However, the Canon seems to have created a business model that enables them to make most of their profits from the sale of replacement toner cartridges. In the past, I've gotten around this by buying a cartridge refill kit: you melt a hole in the side of the cartridge with a special tool, refill the cartridge with (much less expensive) toner, tape over the hole and you're on your way. In this game of countermeasures and counter-countermeasures, Canon has now installed a counter chip in its cartridges. At a certain number of copies, the machine gives you an out-of-toner message AND JUST QUITS! No warning and no "light" copies to get you by. When I attempted to refill the black cartridge, I discovered two things. First, it was more than half-full when the chip decided that it needed to be replaced. I'll control myself and refrain from disclosing my emotional reaction when I realized how much toner I was forced to throw away. The second thing was that when I refilled the cartridge I expected, perhaps naively, that the cutoff device would sense that the cartridge was now full. OK, so maybe I was dropped on my head shortly after birth. Some investigation has revealed that the chips are encrypted, such that third-party manufacturers haven't yet been able to create reasonably priced substitute cartridges or replacement chips to defeat the copy cut-off. The bottom line is that I'm stuck paying on the order of $90 for each of four cartridges, three color and one black. The manufacturing cost for these cartridges is about $15. The company can make nothing on the actual machine and because of the rip-off profits on the consumable cartridges, finds the overall product line immensely profitable. I've considered dropping this printer from the roof of my house, but it's so heavy that I'd have to set up a pulley rig. Needless to say, I will be very careful when I replace this printer to make sure that I can refill the cartridges myself in the next brand that I buy. ================== 11/30/10 Update: I replaced the black toner cartridge only 2 months ago, and with fairly light usage, the display reports that the black cartridge's toner is low! The cartridge is half-full or more. However, the counter chip has caused the machine to stop printing AT ALL. No way around it. Worse, When I print in B&W or color, the edges of the pages are smeared with reddish & yellowish colors. It's bad enough that it's making the copies hard to read. I use the printer at home and sometimes print documents to carry with me for later reading. Ugh! The machine is out of warrantee, so I will have to pay for any repairs. Since estimates tell me that the cost of repair is a sizeable fraction of the cost of a new machine, I'm getting rid of it. I'm planning to ship it back to Canon with a letter telling them two things. 1. I will never buy any other canon product. 2. They may keep the machine since to me, it's now a big, ugly, heavy, expensive paperweight. 30 of 31 people found the following review helpful. Great Product at a competitive price By she The features of this printer are awesome for the price, and I would highly recommend it. I purchased this product on sale for $569. I was also seriously considering the Brother DCP-9045CDN, which has slightly lower ink prices (with their high capacity cartridges), but I'm pretty sure that I won't regret sticking with the Canon brand. After purchasing several Canon products (including this one), I have a lot of respect for Canon's consistent product quality, customer service, features, and value. This is my first home laser printer. I'm quite pleased to finally graduate from the world of inkjets: no more slow printing, annoying print head cleaning cycles,

I've been looking for a good laser printer that I could have on my network for a while now. I have a small office and am an aspiring teacher (currently student teaching). When I can't get to the copy machine at school, I wanted something I could use to do some "mass printouts" for my students. I had an old NEC Superscript, but it frequently paused between pages for a breather and was generally slow. If you don't need the network card (print server) built into this printer, then the 1320 (not 1320n) would be an amazing value! For me, I wanted the networking, so I was willing to spend the extra money. Setup was relatively simple, changing the IP address was easy, and I was up and running, printing from my Windows XP machines AND my MacOS X (10.3.7) machines. Now for the printer itself. I'm very impressed with the build quality. Printers have been turning into plastic junk lately, but this one still has metal guts, metal supports holding the paper in the bottom tray, etc. Certain parts seem like generic plastic, but overall it has a nice fit and finish. Print speeds are amazingly swift! The first thing I put this little print-monster through was a 70-copy worksheet for my students. It took sheet after sheet without a pause! It might grab paper just when the previous sheet is half way through because they seem to keep flying out! Duplex printing was a bonus with this unit - handy in a pinch, but it slows the print speed by about 2-3 times - because it pulls the paper back inside and reprints on the other side... Either way, I dare you to find a quality printer like this, with a duplexer for this price! Instant on fuser sends paper printing within 8 seconds. Overall, I'm very pleased! I was tempted to get the next model up (2420) but the price difference with no standard duplexer killed that deal. Wish list? An tiny LCD display telling me whats going on would be nice - but it has lights which do the job just fine. Also - and I'm just dreaming here, it would be nice to see an option for this printer to staple printouts...I know, I've been around pricey copy machines too much! So, pick yourself up this printer! You won't be sorry. The print quality is very crisp - your well-known HP laser quality, and even graphics are suitable! Its B&W (no color printing), but the money saved on just one toner from time to time as apposed to inkjet cartridges every other month is mind boggling! ...and how often do you need color printing? Some may, but for the bulk of what I print, B&W is fine. High recommended! ...feel free to contact me if you have any questions that I might be able to help you with. 23 of 23 people found the following review helpful. A year in use--still going strong By T. M. Pruitt One-year update (11/2005): I would now give this printer 5 stars, as my original concerns (below) were superficial/cosmetic issues. The printer has performed wonderfully over the past year, no issues or breakdowns. Toner life has been well beyond my expectations, lasting just over a year of use. (I typically print a lot of academic, text-focused articles. Graphic-heavy works might use toner more quickly.) Printer speed is great, and even pretty decent using the 2-sided mode. At this point, my only complaint is that the manual feed 'slot' isn't a 'tray'--thus requiring a bit of attention when using. Regardless, I can recommend this printer for home or small-office users who want fast, black and white printing. ---------- I recently purchased this printer to make printing over my home network easier. Functionally, the printer warms up quickly, text is clear, and it comes installed with some nice fonts one doesn't normally find standard in Windows, such as CG Omega and Univers. Network setup and installation were easy, you do need to have your own ethernet cable, but you just plug

You get laser color, speed (17 ppm), networking. 2 trays all in one machine. If you want great color, don't buy a laser machine, get an inkjet instead. But if you want good color documents printed in a speedy manner for less cost than an inkjet, buy this printer. One of the real benefits of this printer is that it comes with 4 FULL toner cartridges which would normally cost over $500 for the cartidges alone! The toner cartridges are all exposed when you open the cover, making installation very simple. Jams are extremely easy to remove when you have such wide access. By buying this printer, you are getting a lot of bang for your buck! 20 of 21 people found the following review helpful. Get Rid of your InkJet By Michael T. Farinha Pros: - Prints fast from sleep in both Black & White and Color. - Great print quality for a laser printer - Cheap price per page (According to the Toms Hardware artical: "Color Laser Printers: Fast and Affordable!") - Printing price-per-page: 1 cent B&W, 8 cents Color - Networked enabled versions (3600n & 3600dn) have an extensive web based configuration menu. (I'm not sure if you can access it via the USB connection) Cons: - Packaged drivers do not work under Windows XP x64 Other Thoughts: -To get the proper drivers installed into Windows XP x64 you need to download them from hp's webiste. If you are installing it over a network you need to add the printer via Windows Control Panel and specify "local printer attached to this computer" then create a new "Standard TCP/IP port" and then specify the printers IP addy. - I'm glad to be free from expensive ink cartridges. If i need photo quality prints I'll send my pics to Costco over the internet, which is much cheaper than the cost of an ink jet print. 23 of 30 people found the following review helpful. Think Twice About Host Based Printers By Charles D. Mckinney I bought this HP3600n printer as an upgrade for my worn-out HP2500. I immediately experienced a drastic drop in printing speed. The print language is HP JetReady 4.2, which is a host-based language. HP seems to have removed the processing power to reduce costs on these low-end printers and placed the burden on the users computer. I am running OSX 10.4.11 on a G4 PPC tower and printing to this printer is unacceptable. It takes 1 hours to print a 24-page document from InDesign and 9 minutes to print a 1 page Illustrator doc that contains only text. Also you surrender the computer while this processing takes place. It is like not having a print spooler function. You also have to put up with the very light and contrasty color from the new toners. This can be tweaked out by cranking every color control from the panel ( plus two for all colors and all shades.) I suspect that the amount of toner used per page will correspondingly go up resulting in high consumable costs. It was mistake on my part in buying this printer. The correct choice for a unit with comparable duty cycle and features but with a processor is the CP3505. Compare and contrast the two printers at HP web site and you will see that a lot of features are obtained for a small increase in price. Thank goodness that my supplier allowed me to return this printer. Think long and hard before buying any model HP laser printer with host based processing. See all 40 customer reviews...

For even greater efficiency, the MFC-6890CDW also allows you to scan directly to email and media cards (media cards sold separately), OCR, PC-Fax and more. If all that weren't enough, Brother has equipped this all-in-one machine with a high speed 33.6 Kbps fax modem for ultra-quick faxing. You no longer need to have four separate machines taking up valuable space in the office--the Brother MFC-6890CDW takes care of it all--printing, copying, scanning, and faxing. Built-in Automatic Duplex Printing With the MFC-6890CDW's built-in automatic duplexer, you can automatically print on both sides of 8.5 x 11-inch paper. This helps save on paper and mailing costs, reduces the space required for document storage, and offers the benefit of reducing paper waste. With two trays, the MFC-6890CDW has a total capacity of 350 sheets. View larger. Interactive 4.2-Inch Touchscreen Color LCD Display The easy-to-use and interactive 4.2-inch touchscreen interface lets you preview faxes, edit photos, and view the help menus for quick and easy reference. Simply press the large, on-screen buttons to navigate the menu system or to view and enhance photos before printing. The touchscreen display tilts up to provide easy access to its on-screen controls, and then tilts back flush with the control panel for a sleeker look. Flexible Connectivity Options: Wired, Wireless, USB 2.0, and More Enjoy the convenience of wireless connectivity with the MFC-6890CDW's 802.11b/g WiFi capability that allows you to connect multiple computers to the same printer wirelessly. If you're not ready to go wireless yet, the MFC-6890CDW's Ethernet network interface makes it a natural fit for a wired network as well. Other connectivity features include USB 2.0, if you want to connect directly to your computer; support for compact memory media, such as SD cards, xD cards (additional purchase required,) and more; and a PictBridge/ USB direct interface for printing directly from a PictBridge-enabled digital camera or USB flash memory drive without the need for a computer. Easy-to-Load Economical Four-Cartridge Ink System The MFC-6890CDW uses four separate ink cartridges (black, cyan, magenta, and yellow), so you only need to replace the cartridge that is depleted. This represents a significant advantage when compared to cartridges that house multiple colors and need to be thrown away when the first color runs out. A front-loading compartment makes it easy to access and change cartridges. The MFC-6890CDW uses either standard or high yield ink cartridges. High yield cartridges contribute to a lower cost per page and total cost of ownership. Durable Design for Busy Offices The MFC-6890CDW is the ideal choice for busy offices that need a multi-function machine built for consistent, reliable performance. Thanks to its unique design--a maching capable of printing and scanning up to ledger-size documents, yet still measuring just 21.3 x 19.2 x 12.7 inches (HxWxD) and weighing only 34.4 pounds--it delivers maximum performance in a footprint well suited for small offices or workgroups. The MFC-6890CDW is backed by Brother's two-year Express Exchange Limited Warranty. What's in the Box MFC-6890CDW multi-function printer, four high-yield ink cartridges (black, cyan, magenta, and yellow), quick setup and user's guides, CD-ROM with drivers and software for Windows and Mac OS. Phillips This is a large printer with lots of features that work well. I set this up on the wireless function to operate with my Mac. It only took one setup and I've experienced no problems with the range, which I did experience on my HP initially. Sending documents to print is a fast and easy task. It has an easy to use and good looking large touchscreen to take you through each menu. This is great and time saving when compared with other printers. Having the ability to print ledger photos without going to a printer store is fantastic and I used it to make several posters for our portfolio. Now to the caveat, big or small depending on your needs. The print quality is not nearly as good as the HP. It's comparable to other brands, very similar to what Lexmark puts out, but could not compare in color quality to my HP. Yesterday, I needed to print out a color chart for our business products and I did a couple on the normal settings on my HP. Then my ink got low so I switched over to the Brother to make a couple on there. I decided to put it on the best quality settings because I wanted the colors to be very vibrant. It takes a good bit of time to print on the high quality setting so I was expecting a lot and was very disappointed when it was finished. The colors looked washed out or a bit faded when held side by side to what I had just printed on the HP and took 3 times as long to print. I took it without saying which was which and showed it to my husband who pointed to the HP document and said that it was so much better and that there was no comparison. As far as my color chart, the HP was very usable and the Brother not at all. To be fair, the Brother has settings for its color printer that you can manually enter. I'm just not adept enough to do that, to know which settings to set the colors on. But as far as default printing, you won't get top quality photo printing, you will get adequate printing. So, the bottom line is if you need high quality color printing, then this might not be the right printer for you. But if you are an occasional photo printer or primarily use it for office or business documents where vibrant color quality is not required, then this is a great, easy to use multi-function printer and you should give it a try. 32 of 32 people found the following review helpful. Good for a specialized purpose By Gary Washer After using this printer's predecessor (MFC-6490CW) for over a year, I can offer the following: My requirements are very specific. I need ledger-size (11x17) scanning and printing...period. Just try to find an AIO at this price that will do that (unless you want to pay $600+?) Most of my documents are B&W, some with a small amount of color highlighting, and this printer works flawlessly for that purpose. For color photos, make sure you use photo paper or the color is so washed out even at the custom maxed-out settings that I don't bother printing photos on plain paper. The automatic document feeder, ADF, is somewhat flakey and skews the paper a bit too much for my finiky demands so I just limit myself to using the glass-top surface for most scanning. I love the scan-to-file feature that doesn't require input from the PC and allows several file formats as the default, including PDF. If you are not picky about the document skewing of the ADF, this printer will scan a stack of originals and place the entire set into a single multi-page PDF file if you desire. This printer uses replaceable ink "tanks" instead of ink/head cartridges and this makes it much easier to manage and refill if you choose. The printer asks if you have installed a new tank and then takes your word for it, unlike the HP I used previously that insisted on reporting an out-of-ink condition even after refilling. Since this printer's tanks have no electronics inside, there is no serial number to read and
