The print quality is excellent, no smudges and it prints pages at a high speed. I thought a starter toner cartridge would be included with the printer but I went though an entire tax season printing numerous returns and IRS publications and I am still using the same cartridge. One minor problem is the noise level. It is loud! At first, you may be tempted to "dash" out of the room. I actually has mine in a closet (it is connected to a linksys wireless print server). Setting up the printer was relatively easy and if you decide to connect wirelessly that process is easy as well.I recommend the printer for the quality print, the small size and the cost per page. (...) I believe a USB cable is included with the printer but not a parallel cable. 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A fantastic printer at a great price! By Eric J. Fridman I bought this printer to replace an old HP Laserjet 2100TN. The 2100TN is five years old and still runs flawlessly.Anyway, this 2300 is great. The noise level doesn't matter to me, but it seems to be about the same noise level as any other black and white laser I've owned - no better no worse. This printer is definitely very fast. I also like the ability to set so many options through the buttons on the front and to see information on the display. My old printer didn't have a display, just colored lights, so this is a big improvement.I was even more pleasantly surprised when I found that I was able to take my network card from my old Laserjet and put it in the new one. Surprised once again when I found that my optional extra paper tray worked on the new printer too. And lastly, memory upgrades for this unit are quite inexpensive, and easy to install. This is a fabulous printer, and I can't say enough good things about it. 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Great printer for those who want quality black & white work By Byron Walter Oh my! Whether printing lab reports from a windows XP system or via the USB port on my Windows 98 Toshiba notebook this printer flies. The lab data is simple stuff but I usually print PageMaker & Excel files via PostScript with my notebook. This printer sucks it all down and spits it out with beautiful results. The 2300 represents a big step in print quality and speed up from my old HP 4mp. Big thumbs up. See all 7 customer reviews...

Dallam I bought this mail order from New Egg, not Amazon, but I wanted to review it here among other review sites in order to help others. First, this printer is my third laser printer over the last 12 years. The first laser I owned was for college. It was a nice, small Okidata. It performed very well. My second laser was a Samsung 1430, which I still have today and it still prints excellently. My third laser was the 610ND. Everything this printer says it does, it does, such as printing 21+ pages per minute in both mono and color. The color is unbelievable right out of the box. I used Adobe 1998 for a profile and sent the image at 600DPI (which is the 610's native format) to the printer. The colors were near exact matches to the screen, and as a professional photographer, I have my 23 LCD hardware calibrated. Of course the colors aren't as vibrant as an inkjet or as smooth, but for plain paper 20lb, they are very excellent. The contrast between colors and shades is smooth and I see no banding or streaking. ON top of that, you can also adjust each color's saturation and contrast, among other settings that allow you to dial in the color matching for your screen. Text is very sharp down to 3 points. The printer is easily set up in less than 10 minutes, including software installation. There are two pieces of software: (1) The driver and (2) The interface software. The interface software allows you to set the printer settings from your computer. Alternately, you can set the same settings on the printers front LCD panel. I bought this printer exclusively to print tear sheet on plain paper, quickly and anytime I need them, to show models and clients possible poses and to give them ideas about the shoot. Sure, I could have used an inkjet, but inkjets don't shine on plain paper--nor do they duplex and that saves paper. This laser printer does both duplex and prints nicely on plain paper. I was thinking about fast printing and doing it cheaply. It also does card stock up to 48 lbs, cards, envelops, etc, all in color, (plus you get laser sharp text). You also get built in DUPLEX printing, which means you can print on the front and back of the paper automatically. This brings me to my only problem, and why I will need to return the unit to New Egg. When duplex printing, one of the sides of the paper will have incorrect margins. So one page will print with say 1/2" margins all around, whereas the other side will be offset left and top. Samsung tech support was pretty fast, about a 2-4 minute wait. A tier two tech asked me a few questions and said it was a hardware problem. They wanted to send a repair tech to my house, which is included in the warranty (14 months if you return the warranty card)--which was good. However, it's only 3 days old! So I told them to hold on to my ticket and let me see how much of a hassle it would be to get New Egg to send me a new one. New Egg said it was no problem, but I'd need all of the original items plus the original packaging. So I said if you are missing one item that came in the box, or the box itself, the warranty is voided? The CSR rep said pretty much that was true for returns. She explained that Samsung requires those stipulations. So I said that was cool I needed to talk to their manager because it doesn't say anything about that on their warranty page, and that I was going to post our conversation all over the internet, like I'm doing now. So she said she would check again to see if she could do it just this one time. About 30 seconds later she had the "ok," but said I needed all of the items including the text pages or I would not get a refund. So I dug it all out of the trash for them. Furthermore, they will not cross ship the items. They want me to repurchase the same unit and they will credit my card for the return. I then asked her if I could buy another unit and when it

Wireless Printing Is a Miracle By Stephen Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/RCA4HM7AVDQBD I waited a long time for a wireless printer, and the HP 6988 does not disappoint. I followed the setup instructions without difficulty, and had the printer running in less than 10 minutes. Installation on my wife's laptop was even faster. Printing is fast, and the quality of text is good enough for routine document printing. Color printing is also good, though not stunning. As you can see from the video, print time is within seconds, and on my network, indistinguishable from a wired connection. There's little printer "rocking", and the 6988 is quiet. As for HP's bundled software, I haven't had any issues with it, as I simply hit the "print" button and the printer works. Once you have a wireless printer, you'll never go back to a wired connection. Everyone in range of the printer can print a document. The printer can be placed anywhere within the house, with the only cord being the power supply. Wireless printing has been "in the offing" for a long time, and the 6988 finally makes it practical, affordable, and easy. 66 of 69 people found the following review helpful. Initially Very Good - But Blindsided By Unrepairable, Fragile Part By R. Sprague We bought this printer (in its initial iteration as a 6980) almost two years ago and it worked fine for a while - wireless was nice and overall quality seemed good. As noted in another review, it plays well with Linux and MacOS; we use Mac, Linux in a couple of flavors, as well as Windows at home and had no problems using the printer with any of them. It was not necessary to install the bloated client software in Windows to make the printer work properly. Recently we began to get an error on the black ink cartridge; I also noticed that it seemed to feel different going in. Changing the cartridge for a new one did not make the error go away. In spite of the error it appeared to print black just fine, so I continued to use it while researching the problem. I now believe that although it printed black, it was using the color cartridge to mix black and using ink at a great rate. Very expensive! HP tells me that the black cartridge cradle is defective (a tiny plastic tab that holds the spring has broken and will not allow proper seating of the cartridge) and further says that this is not a repairable item! The only recourse offered was a replacement printer at a $79.95 price. This amounts to selling us a new printer at about Amazon retail price - not an ideal solution. This printer did not experience heavy use, and cartridges were always changed carefully. It has not been abused. I have examined the plastic tab in question and it looks very fragile to me - a design flaw? Perhaps it should have been made of stronger material or designed to be more substantial. I would not have purchased the printer had I known of this weakness in the design and the impossibility of repair. Have replaced this printer with another type. I don't recommend this printer, in spite of an otherwise apparently good design and good print performance. Look elsewhere! 31 of 33 people found the following review helpful. Perfect network printer for Linux & Windows home users By Jerone Young I'm just not sure what is up with the bad reviews. I don't seem to be seeing these issues. I bought this after much research. You see I primarily use Ubuntu Linux and I needed a wireless network printer that I could setup without the need of Windows or Mac. All you need is a web browser (so you could use wii or iphone if you really wanted). I'm coming from a terrible experience over the years of fighting with a linksys wps54g printer server hooked up to my old Deskjet 932c (it has not been fun). Way to go HP! You don't need any specific OS with this printer! You just plug it in via ethernet and if you press the "report" button it will print out it's ip

Samsung CLP-670ND Color Laser Printer

Samsung's focus on high specification and quality color prints has shaped the development of this compact and durable printer range when your business demands high levels of performance

By It Just Works Purchased this printer for a specific and not particularly hard work purpose (amongst many other large and small print systems). Love the output although its a bit pricey on toner. After a few weeks of use we noticed phantom "jams" that caused duplicate print outs. Following these getting worse I decided to spend some quality time with Samsung support. Firstly, they did not have this printer listed on their support site so I had to contact them directly. I was then told that the printer was too new and they were not trained to support it (this is Samsung) so I had to call a special phone number. I called this number only to be told it was out of warranty (well inside the 1 year warranty). Next step was to prove warranty status and then go through the issue. Finally the issue was diagnosed as a faulty paper cassette and they were going to send a new one. I received a ticket (after multiple calls) and waited patiently only to subsequently receive a "this ticket has been cancelled" notification a few days later. I called Samsung and was then told they had no record of the case whatsoever (this ticket and case was over a period of months). Out of frustration we shelved the Samsung and put an old Color HP in its place for the time being. The issue with this printer appears to be a very flimsy cassette design. Over time the paper feed is off by a few millimeters which then causes the printer to think it is jamming due to a split second "stick." The printer recovers and generates the print job in duplicates. This can get expensive and irritating, not to mention the phantom error/jam messages appearing on desktops of frustrated users. The manual feed works fine. It is apparent Samsung is completely indifferent to supporting this product. Its a shame, its a nice piece of hardware, has decent drivers and is fairly easy to use and has great output but its delicate cassette design and lack of support puts it at the bottom of the list for us. I'm not new to troubleshooting printers and the frustration that accompanies the process in many cases but have to say Samsung support amazed me with their complete lack of interest in that part of the sale. I guess I am now in the market for a new cassette, even though the existing one is still under warranty. Further followup with Samsung continues to go nowhere. 0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Wonderful printer By Roger A. Krupski The Samsung CLP-670ND Color Laser Printer is all a small business or heavy duty home user could ask for. The colors are very deep, brilliant and accurate. The registration (alignment of the 4 color layers) is so good that no mis-alignment can be seen even with a magnifying glass. The printer to PC connection can be either USB or Ethernet (network). When connected to the network, the printer can be configured to email any problems it finds or status reports (such as "sleeping" or "paper jam" or "out of paper", etc...).There are drivers available for Windows, MAC-OS and Linux... so it should work for almost everyone.Although this is a "document" printer, it's print quality is so good that, when used with photo quality paper, it works great as a PHOTO printer. The printer is fast. If it's asleep when the print job starts, it takes about 15 seconds to "wake up and warm up". After that the prints just come out one after another. I timed it and, once the printer gets going, it does about 26 pages per minute (color, standard resolution). When printing in the highest quality mode, the speed is approximately 1/2 or about 13 pages per minute. The printer has a built in web server. The administrator or owner can log into the printer and view everything as well as change settings and upload new firmware if it becomes available. This web administration feature is also where the owner sets the email address in which to send status and error

Lexmark Color Laser with scanner/copier (X543DN) By Mac_Cat The features included fast printing, full color, automatic double sided printing (w/o fax option). It will work as a network printer, too. It was clearly designed to work with Windows, but it is also sold as Mac OS compatible, and the User Manual walks you though set-up steps with Windows or Mac OS at the same time. It is thorough. Thank goodness it's in HTML format, too. I'm a long time HP printer user (30+ years) and I wary of other brands. But, I haven't had a good experience with HP over the years - they just don't keep their printers drivers up to date (at least, not for Mac or Unix systems). Mac users won't have any problems with this printer, and the Mac installer is included. The printer driver did not include a double sided printing option. You have to be working from one of the Microsoft Office applications, to notice a third line of options called "Copies & Pages" > "Printer Features". Opening up that list provides all the printer functions like printing form the options sheet feeder (envelope) and you can turn on double sided printing (from the"Layout: menu), if you look carefully enough. You can also choose binding on the long or short side, too. My first mistake was that I assumed the envelope in the single sheet option feeder would give it priority to the main paper bin (as it does on HP printers). While I am impressed that this printer worked right out of the box (no set-up required). I followed the instructions to the letter, installing the "software" before plugging in the printer. But, it might as well be using the Generic Postscript driver - nothing special about the driver. While unpacking, it took me about 15 minutes to follow all the colored tape to pull about a dozen plastic shipping pins. Not real hard, but I was still surprised at how many of those pins where installed. It is easy to snap off the plastic pins, so use care when removing them. I was not impressed with "pinch and lift" access to the toner drawer - it sticks. But, I do like the small square toner cartridges, which fit snugly in their respective slots. Each toner box is keyed, so you can mix up the colors. The print quality is excellent. Finally, I'm printing off web pages that look just like they do on my monitor. No calibration needed. That's impressive. Color copies and photos look great, as well. If you were used to printing color photos off in B&W on a monotone laser printer, you'll find the color version more interesting. The manual also neglects to point out the importance of using high quality, polished paper for laser printers (probably because HP sells so much of it). Good paper is really important for sharpness and brightness. When you print to a bond or cotton stock paper, it will look fuzzy, because of the paper texture. The printer has an option for gloss, but I haven't tested that with a photo. It copies great, speed is good once it warms up, but warm-up can take 20-30 seconds. Once it's running, it does good. I printed out a 40 page PowerPoint file that had heavy black frames. It often took 30-50 seconds to render a page, but others came out steady. On a Mac, the PDF rendering is done in software, not through a chip in the printer. So, some of the delay was no doubt, on the computer end. However, my Mac Pro has a lot of CPU power and RAM to match. Scanner? - I haven't found any Lexmark installed Scanner applications, but I was able to choose the scanner from the "Import" function in Adobe PhotoShop and Preview, but not from iPhoto. It works, but it's a bit awkward. HP's software takes you directly into a suite of applications that help you edit the picture and print to photo paper of any size, and the have all kinds of printing options like masks. I don't like the rather small, vertical output tray in the back and because of that feature, I did not order the extra paper bin. You

I bought the Brother HL-5250DN printer from Amazon for five reasons: 1) fast monochrome (black and white) printer. 2) network capability. 3) automatic duplexing (printing on both sides of the paper). 4) Enclosed paper tray. 5) Price (and the one-year manufacturer's warranty is nice, even on the refurbished product). I also like the low toner, paper, and drum replacement indicator lights on the printer. The cost of the toner cartridges is about the same with other printers I've seen. What comes in the box: Printer, drum and toner assembly, AC power cord, paper Quick Setup Guide, CD-ROM. The CD-ROM has the drivers, entire Owner's Manual, and animated installation guide. Note: No cables are provided. If you are going to connect the printer to a wireless router, you will need an Ethernet cable. If you are going to connect the printer directly to one computer, you will need either a USB or parallel cable. The printer has connections for both. Setup The setup did not go as easily as I hoped. I had two problems with installation and setup: 1) I was not sure which network to use (peer to peer or shared). 2) After installation, I could not print from one of the two computers on the network. After easily removing some shipping adhesive tape, inserting the drum/toner assembly (looks like a full toner cartridge, not a starter cartridge) and paper tray, I was ready to proceed with installing the software drivers. The Quick Setup Guide presents you with choices for Windows 98/Me/2000/XP: USB interface, parallel interface, and network interface. There are also choices if using Windows XP Professional x64 Edition and Macintosh. The manufacturer's website indicates Microsoft Vista has "built-in" drivers but Brother drivers are also available on the website. Upon clicking "Install Printer Driver" from CD-ROM menu, I was presented with three choices: USB cable users, Parallel cable users, and Network cable users. I chose the network cable users since I wanted to add the printer to my wireless network router. I was presented with a license agreement that I accepted. I then had to choose between "Brother Peer-to-Peer Network Printer" or "Network Shared Printer". I chose peer-to-peer to print directly to the printer over the network rather than to a central server on a shared printer. On Step 8 I had to choose "LPR" or "NetBios". I had no idea which one to choose and I didn't find any useful information to help with the decision. I chose LPR and clicked Next. The printer was recognized. Make sure to write down the IP Node Address (for a wireless router it is something like 192.xxx.xx.x). Now, I needed to access the printer from my wireless computer running Microsoft Vista. I went to the Control Panel and double clicked on Printers. I then chose "Add a Printer" and selected "Add a network, wireless or Bluetooth printer". The computer searched for and found the printer. A couple more clicks and I was successfully printing from the wireless computer. Printing from the desktop computer running Windows XP, connected to the router with an Ethernet cable, would not be as simple. The computer recognized the printer but would not send any data to the printer. I went to Control Panel, Printer and Faxes, right clicked on Properties. The General tab did not have the Location of the printer. I added 192.xxx.xx.x and clicked OK and tried printing a document but I was not successful. After two hours of dealing with it and looking at the company's website, I called the company (toll-free phone number right on the box). The company was closed; I called the next morning just after the company opened at 9 a.m. Eastern. I went through a very brief voice prompt menu and I was connected to Robby in all of about two minutes. He was polite but he was not able to solve my problem. He

Most helpful customer reviews 83 of 90 people found the following review helpful. Poor quality control By MARTIN HELLMAN Note added October 15, 2008: Amazon still won't let me change my rating, which now would be 1 star (the lowest) based on horrendous quality control. I bought two of these and both had hardware failures within a year or two, of course outside of warranty. The one I bought for my daughter had its network card fail. She can still use it via USB, but not over the network. The one I bought for myself recently failed to scan, fax or copy when using the document feeder, which uses a separate sensing window from flatbed copying and scanning. As a flatbed copier or scanner, it still works. But when using the document feeder, the copies or scans come out blank. And, yes, I've put the paper in the right side up. I suspect that there's a separate sensor or light for that window and it's broken. On top of the horrible QC this seems to imply, my email to HP took them eight days to answer and then all they said was "this case is a hardware issue so our recommendation for you is to call 800-HP-INVENT (800-474-6836) so you can talk with a Hardware technical agent that can guide you through some trouble shooting steps to determine the cause of this problem and also give you the best solution." OK, I call and after over a significant wait time, I learn that they can help trouble shoot by phone for a fee, offer me a trade-in on a new model, or repair this one. No way am I going to waste more money on this disaster. While maybe I've just had a bad run of luck, this does not appear to be the HP I used to know, where quality was top notch. Note added March 19 2007: Amazon won't let me change my rating from 4 to 3 stars, but I would do so if I could due to networking problems that resurfaced. I suspect that this is an issue with networked printers in general, not HP, but the time it took to solve the problem makes me wonder whether I would have bought this printer if I knew then what I know now. When the network access works, it's great, but if your network undergoes a change (I had to replace a Linksys router that went bad), be prepared to do some work. It took me several hours to get things working again. Before I had this problem, I bought one of these as a gift for my adult daughter, living in another state. She had to get the "geek squad" in to solve her similar problems, at a cost of roughly $200. The problem seems to be changes in the IP addresses in the network, and the manual didn't make it easy to figure out how to even find out the IP address that the printer currently is using. (Hint: Print a Configuration Report from the printer's front panel, using the menu. The manual does tell you how to do that, and the IP address is part of that report.) Once you have the IP address, I think getting the printer back up would be a lot easier -- but I'm not about to bring it down and find out! Hoping this helps. I have several Macs and one Windows machine and had been using two separate printers for the two "tribes." I also had a fax machine, an old flat bed scanner, and a copier -- all taking lots of real estate. When the Samsung ML1430 that I was using on an Airport Extreme USB printer sharing system broke after three years, I decided to go with a networked printer that could be shared between the Macs and the PC. I wanted a major printer brand, and HP was at the top of that list. Why? Because Samsung had stopped supporting the Mac and, as I upgraded my OS, I had had difficulties keeping the printer working. The old driver didn't work with some OS upgrades. I hoped that a networked printer would make sharing among the Macs and the PC easy -- and to a large extent it has. I did have minor problems getting the printer to work with the PC since I had to turn off all firewalls during the installation and Dell had two. After about an hour of on-line research and fiddling, I got it to work. Getting the Macs to recognize the printer was

Good, reliable printer By Barrymore We installed fourteen of these under our purview (college dorms) 10 months ago and our residents printed ~800,000 copies since. Pros: * They simply do not jam. I've run a printing operation serving 2500 residents for eight years and have never had a workgroup laserprinter be so reliable. * They work well in an 'open' printing environment. We us PostScript and accept about 25% of our jobs from Macs, 70% from PCs - mostly XPSP2, and 5% Linux. There are no noticeable OS issues. We've seen that certain versions of Acrobat on Windows or Mac may fail to print, particularly with large file sizes (>300MB ps) or with full-page mathematical notations, but Adobe upgrades fix that on Windows and Preview fixes that on Mac. * Changing toner is a no-brainer. * The print quality is excellent for both text and color images. I'm uncertain why Andre's experience was so poor, but believe it was an anomaly. Cons: * It's slow. Expect to wait the 20 seconds or so for first page out unless you've just printed another job. And, when it starts printing, it's no speed demon. If you are setting up only one or so, the sleep time is configurable, but with 14 of these deployed and managed by student staff, we merely put printers in place, out-of-box. Stick with Xerox workgroup printers for speedy KW printing. * It's heavy. Two person heavy. Really. * It's bigger than your average printer. 6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Don't overexpect, and you'll get what you hoped for By John This is NOT in the same class as the much more expensive 3500 series color MFPs, and it is not supposed to be. At a cost of 1/5th the bigger printers, you need to lower your expectations, but you still get a lot of printer for the money. I've had many inkjet printers and installed many color and BW laser printers. The first laser printer I used was an Apple LaserWriter in about 1987, so my experience with these devices is quite extensive. I have this installed in a home office networked via a simple wireless router and print/scan with XP, Vista, and Win7-64. Positives: + Much faster and sharper printing than even high-quality inkjets when printing typical office documents + Prints evenly and consistently even large areas of highly saturated color on plain paper, unlike the banded printing from inkjets on plain paper + Easy to install on XP, Vista, and Win7 64 as both a USB and network printer + Quiet + Sheetfeeder is convenient and reliable + Prints at the same speed and quality regardless of how long it sits idle or off, unlike an inkjet printer that often needs cartridges replaced or cleaned after sitting idle for a couple of weeks. + Doesn't spew gobs of ink on paper at random intervals, which many inkjets do, especially after they've been sitting idle for some time + EXCELLENT print output - very sharp even at small print sizes and fine lines Negatives: - I have the same problems as others when scanning using the sheetfeeder: Scans always come out as 8.5 x 14. - Low paper capacity. Why doesn't EVERY printer come with a 500 sheet bin? Do manufacturers really save any money by making the smaller bin? - Manual feed is not easy to use. Basically, you need to pull out the drawer and put what you want printed in the regular drawer. - Scanning from front panel isn't working for me, which should be easy to do. Perhaps this is the problem others indicate when they say it is hard to set up. Scanning is fine when you start it from the computer. - Won't email without talking to a computer. I really like that feature in the more expensive models, and it shouldn't be that difficult to implement. - Wont' print truly photo-quality as well as a photo inkjet, but the prints on photo paper are still VERY good. - Do I REALLY need a THREE HUNDRED megabyte package of drivers and software just to print? How about a light-weight software option HP? Better yet, how about building the drivers into the printer's built-in web server so that I don't have to get those monster packages from the Internet? Why can't I manage ALL settings from the built-in web pages? -+ I wasn't satisfied with the default scan settings, but after tweaking to boost the image quality, I am happy with the scan quality and speed. Regarding the price of prints: Although a set of cartridges sets you back about 260 bucks, that will not get you anywhere near the $1.00+ price per page others talk about. My conservative estimate at cost is about $0.15/page in color including paper, less in B/W. If you force B/W printing for most output, you will be closer to $0.04/page. Having spent a ton of money on ink cartridges for inkjets, only to waste much of the ink on cleaning and reprints when gobs of ink land on my output, I think the overall cost of ownership will be close to even or better when compared to a typical inkjet. Counting the cost of time and frustration in the cost of using an inkjet will further weigh the cost per print in favor of the CM1312nfi. Some other "negative" points are speed, lack of duplex scanning/printing, and some other bells and whistles mentioned in other reviews. I don't count these negative points against this printer since these are features that you really can't expect in this price class. I looked long and hard at the HP CM2320, but the much higher cost of entry didn't seem to pay off for me. Including a set of

Great Printer ! By Murphy's Green Team Having used other color lasers, I was looking for a good, reliable machine and this is it. I print all kinds of documents: pictures, color brochures, postcards, text and image combinations and the Ricoh performs very well on a variety of media. For the price, this is an excellent choice. 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Barton Received printer, set up the unit, installed HP toner cartridge and printer drivers. All features worked with the exception of the #3 paper tray paper pick-up assembl,y when loaded with 11" X 17" paper. Every attempt to print 11 x 17 copies resulted in a "Paper Jam" message and the unit would shut down. I e-mailed PFC (seller) regarding the problem and they forwarded the e-mail to their tech support. The tech called with-in the hour and after running a number of tests the diagnosis was a failure of the paper pick-up assembly in the #3 paper tray unit. PFC sent a replacement tray unit and upon installation, the issue was resolved. I would recommend this seller; I was impressed with their methods and timely response of resolving warranty issues with their products. See all 1 customer reviews...

Most helpful customer reviews 36 of 39 people found the following review helpful. As a network printer it works great, but... By W. B. Halper I also have a problem with the printer creasing envelopes. It appears to shift the flap of the envelope slightly while feeding it through the fuser and the heat and pressure causes another crease about 1/8" offset from the original one. I returned the first unit that I ordered because of a loud squeaking noise that developed while printing. The second unit also squeaks somewhat (Certainly more than my old mfc-8820D), but it doesn't sound like it's dragging a cat through the manual feed slot. There's a big difference between this unit and my MFC-8820D in the scanning area. On my old printer, I could input an email address on the screen and it would forward the document to that address. This guy requires you to select a network computer and then sends the document there. A memory resident program needs to be running on the computer to process the received document...which is a worthless waste of memory space about 99.99% of the time when the computer is doing it's normal job. The memory resident process also conflicts with some HP network printer software and crashes on a couple of our systems, thus rendering them unusable with this scanner. Needless to say, the old way of doing it was much better. In retrospect, and despite the 145,000 pages printed, I probably should have spent the $300 to replace the fuser on my 8820D instead of getting this unit. This one is much faster, but the other trade-offs - the lack of duplexing (known at the time of ordering, but the 8860DN wasn't yet shipping) and the dumbing down of the scanner firmware (unknown until received) are serious handicaps. Oct 30, 2006 update - After about five month of use and about 20K pages printed, my printer is in the shop being repaired. The printer started making loud snapping sounds, like plastic gears stripping, whenever a page was printed...except that the paper jammed every time. The guy in the service center said that he has another identical printer in for repair and that it's the fuser unit that's shot. That would be easy to fix, except that they're on back-order and won't be available for a while. Sigh. I think my next printer will be an HP. November 14, 2006 - I have to give Brother Service credit. 1000 pages post-repair and my machine broke again. They're shipping me a new printer. This will be my second replacement unit...hopefully this unit will be more solid as my warranty runs out in April. November 25, 2006 - update - The replacement unit not only shifts the flap on envelopes, it puts creases all over them, rendering them completely unusable for any purpose. If there was a way to totally unwind this purchase, I would in a second. On the other hand, since design of this unit appears to have all the reliability of an alcoholic after a weekend on the town, I purchased the one year extended warranty. February 10,2007 - update - Well, the machine is now starting to make loud snapping sounds whenever the paper tray is filled up to the full line. It also jams and refuses to feed paper whenever that happens. The solution (so far) is to only fill the paper tray half-full. I really dislike this piece of junk...so much so that I bought HP for my new offices. May 13, 2008 - final update - After limping along in the old office for the last year, the Brother finally died (again). The big question is whether to take it to recycling yard, where they would gently take it apart and salvage the parts, or take it to the local car crusher and watch it receive what it deserves. Alas, my ecological side is coming through and I'll recycle it. Oh well, it would have made a great YouTube video... 25 of 28 people found the following review helpful. The Brother MFC 8460N creases envelopes By Diane M. Sauer I have been unable to get this machine to stop creasing envelopes. It looks quite sloppy and affects the print in places. At times

Most helpful customer reviews 682 of 688 people found the following review helpful. A nicely designed printer... By W. B. Halper Review updated on October 13, 2009 to reflect firmware changes and add information on ink consumption - The Canon MX-860 is an all-in-one printer designed for home or small business. The printing is fast, sharp and clear. The auto-document feeder scans both sides of the page, a tremendous time saver when you work with two-sided originals. Couple that with duplex-printing and it's trivial to reproduce two-sided forms and documents. The network connectivity also works well...in the six months I've had the printer, it's operated flawlessly in a mixed Mac/Windows environment on both wireless and wired networks. Let's look at the MX-860 on a piece-by-piece basis ... Printing The Canon MX-860 uses a set of five ink cartridges for printing. Two of the cartridges are black, with the other three being the typical Magenta/Cyan/Yellow set. The printed output is easily sharp enough to be used for business letters; it almost rivals laser printers in quality. To save paper, the printer has built-in duplexing. I haven't measured it, but single-sided printing speed is quite good...I suspect that the 38 pound weight of the printer is due to some good size motors pulling the paper and moving the printhead around. Printing in duplex mode is quite a bit slower. To avoid smearing, the printer waits for the first-side to dry before printing the second side. Photographs have good tonal gradation and overall appearance, however they don't equal those from a high-end printer that's specifically designed to print photographs. The difference, though, is slight and everybody has liked the prints that I've made. The printer has the usual slots on the front to allow you to insert your camera's memory cards. Scanning Whoopee! Duplex scanning! Have you ever tried to scan a stack of two sided pages? And get them merged into one file in the right order? I tried. Once. Then I went out and paid $400 for a dedicated scanner (the Fujitsu ScanSnap S510). With duplex scanning capability on the MX-860, I wouldn't have needed to do that. You put the papers in the feeder, tell the printer that it's a two-sided original and push the button. Faxing Outgoing faxing works fine. The faxes seem to get there. Originally, the designers of the fax system missed an extremely important feature...you couldn't specify the number of rings before the fax machine answered. Without that ability, it was almost impossible for the machine to peacefully co-exist with your phone service in a single line household. This problem was fixed by a firmware update and current purchasers can set the number of rings before pick-up. Unfortunately, Canon hasn't posted the new firmware, so owners of older machines are stuck...be careful if you buy one used. +1 brownie point for recognizing and fixing the problem. -2 for not making it available... :>( Networking and Setup I had no problems getting both the wireless and wired network up and running. The setup is simple and straight forward. You'll need a USB cable to get the wireless network configured. It may be possible to wirelessly configure the wireless network, but there are certain insanities that even I won't try. You can only use one network - wired or wireless - at once. As I mentioned in the intro, it comes with both Macintosh and Windows software. Getting it to work on my additional networked computers was as simple as inserting the DVD and running the install program. Ink Consumption Some printer politely sip ink, but this isn't one of them. It's not quite as bad as beer consumption at a frat party, but in the last 2500 pages, I've gone through six black and two full sets of color cartridges. That works out to slightly over 10.5 cents per page at Amazon's current (11/11/09) prices for OEM ink cartridges...fine for normal use, but not great if you're going to use the printer heavily. Your ink consumption will vary,
