Since this is a fairly complicated device I will not be able to cover all uses of it but hope to give people some useful information regarding it. This is somewhat brief review on usage since I just received it but want to inform people of my initial impression. Background: This MFC device is going to be used by Mac OS X systems that are connected to the local network via ethernet and Wi-Fi. The MFC is connected to this network via Wi-Fi through an Apple Airport Express Base Station. I am hoping to replace both a Canon CanoScan 8600F scanner and Canon Pixma Inkjet printer. Size, Weight, & Packaging: The box it comes in is fairly large and heavy. The location of the "handles" built into the box is designed for two people to pick it up and I would highly suggest having two people carry it. I managed to carry into the house myself but it was extremely awkward and difficult to do. Opening the box the printer is fairly well protected with formed styrofoam pieces. The weight of the machine by itself is almost 60 lbs. You will need fairly large areas to place this device. The actual desk space it takes up is 16"W x 19"D. The manual however recommends an additional 4 inches of air space on the left and right side and approximately 10" at the back. The height of this device with the scanner lid fully open is 36". I currently only have 26" of clearance so the lid does not open all the way. Once you get the device out of the box you now you get to spend the next 10-15 min removing all the packing tape and material! There is at least 20 pieces of blue plastic tape and plastic orange pieces protecting the device during shipment that must be removed before turning on the device. Drivers: For Mac OS X the drivers are installed automatically as soon as you "add" the printer from any Print dialog. The operating system will download the drivers over the internet and also be kept up-to-date via the normal built-in Mac OS X software update mechanism. I assume drivers are on the included DVD as well in case you don't have internet access. Initial Setup: I wanted to setup this device on a Wi-Fi network. It also supports USB and ethernet connections. One word of WARNING, the Wi-Fi on this printer only supports 802.11b/g. This means if you have your wireless access point set to only support 802.11n like I did you will never be able to get this device to access the Wi-Fi network. I had to switch my Airport Base Station back to supporting 802.11 b/g as opposed to just 802.11n. This results in a slower connection for all wireless devices since the base station switches to using the slowest wi-fi connection type that any of its clients are using. This would not be an issue for "dual-band" wireless access points such as the dual-band Airport Extreme base station. The easiest way to connect the MFC-9560CDW to your wireless network is with the "automatic wireless mode". If your wireless access point supports this you simply tell the MFC to use this mode and it will automatically get the information it needs to connect to your wireless connection including password. To do this with an Apple Airport device you need to use the Airport Utility program and select Manual Setup from the Base Station menu. Once you select that you can then choose "Add Wireless Clients..." from the Base Station menu. This will then allow you to use the "automatic wireless mode" or AOSS that the MFC-9650CDW supports. Printing: Color photos printed from the MFC-9560CDW appear to me to rival that printed from the Canon iP4500 and is an order of magnitude faster. Faxing: I have not attempted to use this yet. Copying: Copying works as expected. I've copied book pages without needing any interaction with a computer. Simply place the facing book page on the scanner/copying glass and press the Copy

Allen I have only ever owned color ink jet printers such as Epson and Brother, but I must say, for Laser printing, HP takes the cake. I do own the HP LaserJet 4 Plus (Monochrome B/W) and it has worked great for me for 6 years plus. This new machine is definitely a major improvement. First off, it is very easy to set up and you can choose whether to have it run off of a USB port, or you can network it through your system. I personally have it connected to my Wireless D-Link router and I have 2 Windows PCs, 1 Toshiba wireless Laptop, and 2 Wireless Macs networked and ALL of them are able to pick up the HP with the provided HP software disk and all are able to print from it. It also prints so fast and is remarkably quiet. It is a monster of a machine in size (be prepared to have a nice big space for it, both in heighth, width and length - it is (WxLxH) 18.00" x 16.00" x 15.00" but remember, you need room to feed the front of it, and you need room for the wires in back). It takes 4 different cartridges (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow & Black - CMYK) so this can be costly. The cartridges run about $80 each, so it costs $320 to replace all of them, HOWEVER, they last for a whopping 2500 pages each color. It would take 5 ink cartridges of each color to last that long. And when the toner is low, you get a warning. You can even view the printer on a network from any connected computer and see EXACTLY how many pages are left for each cartridge (based on averages). The Bad: I'll try not and leave a bad comment about this as the final thing to say, however, it is quite lousy as a paper feeder. I may be doing something wrong, but I've found that you can only print one piece of paper at a time. Sometimes I print out a lot of stuff on one-side of the paper, then, when I'm done looking at it, I turn the paper over, place those in the manual feeder, then use the paper again to do more printing on the other blank side. You can't really do that with this. And as far as printing Business Cards, or Cardstock, it is not the best. You can't simply lay the paper on the tray and then have the printer print from it. You have to insert the paper in a special way, wait for the printer to "suck" the paper in, then once it has it, it is able to print. It did print generic Avery labels okay though. All in all, it is great. Oh, and there's one astounding point that I forgot to make: it prints on both sides WITHOUT having to change paper around or anything, called duplexing (sorry, I didn't know these terms before). For example, I had a 14-page document to print out, so I just went to the 'Finishing' tab and selected 'Print on Both Sides' and wahlah, it printed 7 pieces of paper, two-sided absolutely flawlessly, without having to touch or insert anything. I eventually printed 200 double-sided brochures on shiny color magazine type paper, and the printing was perfect. If you don't need to have this printer on a network, and you don't need duplex (double-sided) printing, get the much cheaper HP 1600 Color Laser. Otherwise, for a color laser printer under $500 to be able to be networked and duplex among other things, it is really a great deal all around, thus, it gets 4 stars. I did have to deduct one star for the bad paper feeder, but aside from that, it's superb. Get yours now - the cartridges are already in it and full-sized (not sample cartridges), so it is ready to go. You may need a Network cable, but it does come with a USB 2.0 cable just in case you don't have one. Enjoy and thank you for reading. 119 of 123 people found the following review helpful. Great upgrade from the 2600n By Daniel Peterson I had been looking around for a color laser printer to replace my trusty old Laserjet IV. I've gotten really used to duplexing at work, and really wanted to have that option

Markell I gave the printer five stars, because of price point (at 89.00, the ability to print wirelessly and with such a good quality printer is amazing) and because the printer has worked seamlessly once it was set up. Also, because HP clearly cares enough to add (not so) little touches such as: 1. Including the USB cable with the printer (Canon does not do this, from what I remember). 2. Including (this is amazing) the actual cartridges with the printer instead of "starter" cartridges that print maybe fifty sheets before conking out. Truthfully, you have to factor that into the price of these "cheaper" printers and realize that you have to tack on another thirty or more dollars to the price to pay for decent cartridges. With the ones supplied, I should be able to print at least 400 pages of black and white letters, email, etc. befor replacing the black cartridge. 3. If, like most of us looking for a small business (or home business) printer, there is the option to use an extended black cartridge which will give you even more pages between changes. This wouldn't be so important for a photo printer, but for what it is (it's called an "Officejet," remember) this is a wonderful feature. 4. The printer goes into standby mode and "wakes up" when needed. Perhaps all new printers do this (my last printer was from a few years ago) but I find this a great feature. Some may be put off by the form factor - this is not a small printer and takes up a fair amount of desk space. Also, the majority of the plastic sides are in white, (or putty, I suppose) which I have a feeling will show dirt and smudges worse than a silver or black model. Finally, let's get to the frustrating elements. As I've said, none of these were bad enough for me to lower the five star rating, but they were a little annoying: 1. (this is trivial but if it saves someone else the headache, it's worth mentioning) - the set up instructions included in the box clearly show a plastic back panel that looks to be inserted when one is not using the black duplex printing back that comes with this unit. Duplex printing means the ability to print on both sides of the page, and the black plastic back is called "optional" in the instructions. Well, upon unpacking the printer I couldn't find the other panel anywhere in the box or on the printer -although it was clearly seen in the picture. I called HP and, as I surmised, the printer does NOT come with this flat back panel. You LEAVE the black duplex printing back (which sticks out in a bump from the back) in the printer all the time. The pictures in the instructions were for the NON-WIRELESS version of the printer. It would have been nice if someone had mentioned that the wireless printer ONLY comes with the black back. 2. It takes the printer up to ten minutes to set itself up when you turn it on for the first time. This is clearly marked in the instructions, but if you don't notice it, you might think something is wrong as you wait...and wait...and wait...for it to print that magical first test page. NOTHING IS WRONG. Have patience. 3. As others have noted, the software is ridiculously slow to install. I will say that when I installed it in our XP (the second computer) it took a fraction of the time, so perhaps this is a Vista issue. But it took (I'm not kidding) forty-five minutes to load. I kept thinking it was hanging, but then it would inch foward another 1% and chug along. I have NEVER had software take this long to load since the DOS days! Oh, and make sure you disable your anit-virus software before you load it. I didn't and it seemed to make it crash the first time I tried to install it. (obviously turn back your anti-virus software after installation). The GOOD NEWS: Once installed, it found the router immediately and both computers found the printer with no problems whatsoever. To

Flawless setup and function with Snow Leopard By Dina Aronson I purchased this printer based on the review of a fellow Amazon user, who mentioned its great compatibility with Snow Leopard, as well as its very affordable price for everything it offers. A loyal HP printer user for many years, I decided to save a couple hundred bucks and try my luck with this machine. I was sold on its many features and low price. I was so pleased with how simple this printer was to set up. From box to print was about 8 minutes, most of that time spent removing tape from the unit and loading the toner cartridges. Network setup was instant: I connected an ethernet cable to my router (which is connected to my cable modem) and POOF -- just by printing something from Word, my Snow Leopard downloaded and installed the appropriate software, and it printed a gorgeous document. I never even needed to insert the CD (but I think I will when I try to use the PC to print to it via the network). I wanted just one printer that all of the family members' computers could print to; this printer has successfully replaced both our black-and-white laser and our inkjet printers. Pros: wireless network printing full color laser printing 600 x 2400 DPI (others have higher but I don't need higher resolution; in fact my eye can't tell the difference!) flatbed scanning flatbed copying compatibility with both Macs and PCs easy setup (at least on a Mac) fast printing (17 pages/minute) Cons: no fax capabilities no duplex printing relatively small flatbed maximum width for paper feed 8.5" doesn't come with cables (make sure you have an extra USB and/or ethernet cable) comes with "starter" toner, and replacements are about $70/each (and there are four) If you're looking for a do-it-all, good-quality full color printer, don't need a fax, don't print large documents, and don't need to do much double-sided printing, you can't go wrong with this printer! 18 of 19 people found the following review helpful. Wireless Scanning + Printing FULLY supported in Snow Leopard!! By D. Shin This is an excellent multi-function device. I had been using the Brother DCP-7020, an incredibly reliable machine, that lasted me ten years without any problems. The only reason I replaced it was to have color digital printing. The 9010CN is great, especially if you're running MacOS X, and ONLY if you connect the printer using the Ethernet network jack to an ethernet hub, airport base station, etc. If you do that, you have full WIRELESS PRINTING AND SCANNING. It's the scanning part that I was surprised at. I'm running Snow Leopard, and if you open up the Print Queue window for this printer, there's a scanning button in the upper-right corner which gives you access to all sorts of scanning options: color/grey, resolution, flat-bed or DOCUMENT FEEDER! I'm not sure if wireless scanning is supported via the USB port (e.g., hook up the printer via USB to an Airport Express); however, if you connect this printer to your network via ethernet and you're a mac user, you get outstanding functionality from this printer. I think others mac users have commented that the Brother-provided drivers and software don't support all the functions for macs. That might be true, but I haven't even installed the Brother-provided software/drivers. If you're using Snow Leopard, the OS itself provides the necessary support of ALL of this machine's functions (that is, except for scanning by pressing the hardware scan button). Lastly, I really appreciate how you can set-up the device's TCP/IP network settings via a browser window, similar to many routers out there, e.g. Linksys. 9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. I have owned four color lasers - this is the best of that group By Billy Hollis I have owned color lasers from HP, Xerox, and Lexmark previously. All of them had issues that gave me fits. All had installation and driver issues which cost me many hours of time to resolve. No such problems here. Plug it in, answer a few questions, and it's printing. I have Windows 7 64 bit, and I was cringing because I expected problems, but I didn't have any. I used the network setup with an Ethernet cable plugged in, and now all the computers in my house can see it and use it. I never did get networking to work right on the Xerox, though I fiddled with settings for the better part of a couple of days. The print quality of this printer is only fair, but for business use it's more than adequate. I've printed a set of training manuals, which have quite a bit of graphics in them, and not noticed the problems noted by another reviewer. Now it's true that this is not a photo printer, and the quality of the printing is not as good as the Xerox 8560 I had, or various photo printers I've seen. But it's fine for typical reports, slide printouts, and so forth. As to capacity, I printed about 900 pages with this printer out of the box, and it's still going. A negative reviewer reported problems in getting only a small number of pages with the starter toner, and expressed surprise at the 5% coverage guideline used to estimate pages. Well, every printer I've ever had used that same 5% to estimate page capacity and cost, so I don't see the problem here. I have almost printed the number of pages the printer is supposed to get out of the box without getting any low toner problems.Another advantage: this printer's replacement cartridges are cheaper than any of the other printers I've owned, even the crayon-like blocks for the Xerox. The printer also has a draft mode that saves toner, which was not available on any other printer I've owned. I don't expect to use it, but others might find it helpful. So the bottom line is that the price, speed, quality, and ease of setup make this a very good match for home office or light departmental business color printing. As someone who has been around the block with various color lasers, this one has been a very pleasant surprise.**Update 14 Jan 2010**I'll subtract half a star for the marginal front feed mechanism. When I use lightweight card stock through the front feeder, every three pages or so I get no feed and a spurious paper jam. I have to exert a small amount of pressure with my hand on the sheet to ensure that it feeds correctly. If it feeds, the result is good because of the flat paper path, but the front feeder ought to work better than that, especially since it only takes one sheet at a time.**Update 21 Mar 2010**I just began replacing toner cartridges after getting about 1100 pages from the in-the-box set. They cyan cartridge went first and the magenta cartridge a bit later, which was no surprise since my slide theme has a lot of blue in it. I got another pleasant surprise: the printer demanded new cyan toner after printing 60 of 75 pages for a manual. I thought I would probably have to start over (because Powerpoint is utterly stupid about numbering pages on handouts). No problem, though. The printer stays on for toner cartridge replacement, and it's easy as pie to do it. Just don't forget to slide the gizzy back and forth that cleans the corona wire. After putting the cover back down, the printer picked up where it left off and knocked out the last fifteen pages. In other news, I found a 256M DIMM from an old laptop, and upgraded the printer's memory. Really easy, though of course you do have to turn it off for that one. There's an exposed slot on the side to put the memory in, and it came right up when the printer was turned back on. The printer is faster now, and doesn't tie up my computer as long on these 75 page print jobs.

Keller Anyone who is familiar with Brother model numbers knows that MFC means Multi Function Copier and the CW means Color and Wireless. Someone complained that this unit did not DUPLEX. If it was a CWD the unit would also print as a Duplex printer. We have the Brother that duplexes and it is great as well. The price of these is ridiculously low for the awesome quality. We have 8 of the non-duplex units in our office and ZERO complaints. As for the 11x17...someone also complained that it did not COPY in 11x17 which is true. How important to do a bit more research and "actually" read the specifications page (yea I know BORING!!!) But, it is designed to print a scanned or emailed image or ENLARGE an image to 11x17 for building prints, etc. Brother printers are fantastic and are work horses. We have used them for years and they print way beyond what we expect. (Most printers today are disposable after a short time but not these). Keep in mind too that the color cartridges are individual, not like the HP that if you use up say all the yellow and have half of the blue left, so what, throw it away. This one you can replace only the one you use the most. Hey and if you check on that major auction site you can get the L61 type refills in a 24 cartridge equivalent size replacement tank, yes all 4 for less than $20 with free shipping!! Each single cartridge is like 6 cartridges, yes it sticks out from the front a little more but so what! If you print several days a week, you need this machine. 27 of 30 people found the following review helpful. Nice Copier By Daniel L. Schorr I bought this to scan and make the occasional copy. I have another printer I make color copies on. It is perfect for what I bought it for. It was easy to set up and comes with software to scan with. I think Amazon has a better price than where I bought it from. I have it plugged into my home network but it has wireless if I ever need it. I am happy with the purchase! 15 of 16 people found the following review helpful. Good ink jet By Kyle A. Stein My experience with Brother products through work led me to investigate using one for my home. So far, I have not been disappointed. My needs include both 11x17 and 8.5x11 document and drawing prints and lots of scanning (8.5x11 only scanning). This printer does all of these and with good results and satisfies my wife's photo printing needs. I have mine set up as a network printer which includes a wireless access point. With this setup, my Iphone has no issues using the printer by way of the Brother App. The fact that wireing the printer deactivated it's own wireless feature does not bother me but I could see how this might bother some people. Print primarily journal articles and never had a problem. Get the extra paper tray if you can afford it. Tried some business cards recently (120lb card stock) and it worked very very well! The black toner is lower than the others but have not had to replace any of the cartridges yet. I should revise my rating to a 5 stars. I still use the printer through a dedicated print server (see below) and have not fiddled with the built-in networking. I have since writing this review also been using Win7 and again, prints beautifully, without any problems to speak of. **********************************************************ORIGINAL********************************** HP CP2025X Color LaserJet Printer (Same as the DN version but with the extra paper tray. Should really give it 5 Stars but feel the long terms costs are going to be high (toner). I have the printer set up on a print server (Linksys, so not using its built in network capabilities on the CP2025X) and am using XP-Pro on all my machines. Don't print a whole lot (maybe ~100pages /month) and have had this printer for some 4 months. I use my HP Laserjet 1160Le to print my B&W stuff and that too is on its own printer server. Word of caution here, I already had the Linksys (Cisco Systems) print servers ($70each) from a couple of years ago but when I checked the built in networking in a cursory manner on the CP2025X with XP Pro it did not work out of the box. I was going to use the print servers anyway so I didn't play around to see if I could get the built in network capability going with XP Pro. I imagine it would work if I played around with it some. The CP2025X replaces an Epson900 that I should have thrown out a long time ago. I researched the color laser printers and settled on this one. I did not want an inkjet because they are not near robust enough over the long haul (even the high end photo printers from Epson). The laser printers tend not to have issues with the nozzles getting clogged. This is a REAL issue if you tend not to use your printer all the time (daily). You spend a few minutes trying to get everything lined up to print with inkjet printers, however good or expensive, and frankly the end product is always suboptimal for color documents and pdfs. With the color laser printers I have used at work over the years you simply hit print, everything works every time. Paper jams on color laser printers are the fault of the operator (either too full or last sheet in a tray). On my Epson I could never get the same effortless printing. The CP2025X was something I could afford and had network capability, so not tied to a specific computer just the router. I never have to wonder whether it printed. I can wirelessly reach my router from upstairs and since the printer is actually hooked into the router (via a print server) I hit print and voila, I come down later and it is all done, perfectly. This happens regardless of whether the printer has been used in the past month. I did consider the Xerox color printers but decided against them for a couple of reasons: I had used one at work off and on and the toner is actually a wax based product that can smudge. The printer was also a lot smellier than the laser printers and needed a few minutes warming up. You can actually smell the wax. I have a small study that the printer is in and I don't leave the windows open and didn't want the wax smell in there. The smell is a drawback with the CP2025X as well but less so. You do smell the toner and this can't be good. This is especially true when you first put the toner cartridges in or if you print out 50 pages at a time. Still, smells A LOT less than the Xerox. The Xerox print cartridges are a lot cheaper and that had me vacillating. In the end the CP2025X is a better product that will print hassle free in

Most helpful customer reviews 5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Not as fast as other models By Chris D. Yue This unit replaced my Ricoh 3500 Color Laser. While the Lexmark has print advantages, its a slower machine print wise in: Energy Save Mode - To first print job it makes a low buzzing noise when it is warming up. I miss the instant spool up of the Ricoh. Duplex Mode it feeds the paper out and then pulls it back in, a rather inefficient and slower duplexing system and to an impatient person you may pull the copy from the feeder causing a misprint. What it lacks in mechanical speed, I feel it makes up in print quality, so its a fair compromise for the price range. 8 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Disaster By Todd Green While advertised as being compatible with the Macintosh operating system, the installation manual's instructions for getting the wireless system working do not work. I needed to use Lexmark's live chat (and allow them to wire in to my computer) to get it working using a completely different installation procedure. Then within a few weeks, the wireless network card began having problems and I needed to resort to live chat again. The technician told me there was NO way to install the printer on a Mac, even though I'd already done it. Almost three hours later, while trying to access a menu on the printer that apparently does not actually exist, the printer started printing from the queue on its own. The technician declared the printer fixed. Within an hour, it stopped working again. The error code clearly says the network card has an unrecoverable error and needs to be replaced, but Lexmark keeps sending me new things to try to get it working. So now I can only use my wireless printer when it is connected by USB cable. On the positive side, print quality is excellent. Speed is good unless there are graphics, in which case it is very slow. If the wireless card wasn't broken and/or if the technical support people could actually fix the problem, I'd probably rate the printer four stars. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Average printer. Would not repurchase By Sam A. Fusco Jr. I replaced an older Okidata with this printer and regret it. The WiFi on this printer has been a challenge. I have had to contact support multiple times to get up and running. You have to make sure you set this item to be on a static IP. That would help you avoid the issues I had. Also, the printer is slow and the manual feed tray is OK at best. Print quality is pretty good. I do like the duplex feature if you are willing to wait for it to complete. Lexmark would NOT be my first choice next time I buy a color laser printer. See all 3 customer reviews...

By Dave Sobasky On the positive side, it prints very quickly in black, a little slower in color (it's a four-pass CMYK printer, meaning it prints Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black in individual runs or passes) but the quality of the color images are fantastic and are only limited by the quality of paper used. It scans acceptably well, not spectacular, but more than well enough for my needs. Haven't tried the fax portion and don't foresee doing so. There are only two negatives that I've found: the machine is noisy even when not in use; it has a loud cooling fan that will run for a long time (more than 20 minutes); and it's shipped with what seems like only a few drops of black toner. If you buy this printer and plan to do any amount of printing right away, you need to get more black toner, pronto. The toner cartridge that came with it lasted less than a week with moderate usage. So far I like it and would recommend it. The printer part of it gets five stars, the scanner four stars. The other qualities--noise, set up, features--bring the overall rating to four stars. 13 of 13 people found the following review helpful. pleasantly surprised By Olivetti We use this printer in our little design office, to supplement the ultra-high-quality (and ultra slow and expensive) prints from our ink-jet printer. I bought this printer to offer speed and economy for daily printing. The prints are surprisingly good, and fast enough to be a welcome relief from that ink-jet printer! There is a bit of fan noise at times, and scanning over the network can be a little slow at the higher resolutions. But overall we are extremely happy with the printer. We've been cranking out full color prints of renderings and drawings, and there are no signs that we are running out of toner. We still don't use if for our final, photographic-quality high-gloss presentations, but we use if for all our daily stuff and interim client reviews. 10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Very Nice Laser Printer BUT only USB scanning for Macs now! By Edward Anastas Overall really nice laser printer for the price and functionality. The only one out there that I can see. However if you own a Mac which is a lot of us... there is only USB scanning using Image Capture, meaning no network scanning like there is from the PC driver. See all 30 customer reviews...

Comments on HP Officejet 8500a By Dave R I have been looking for a networked color laser printer suitable for home and small office use for some time. Then I received an ad for this printer. I was convinced to try it because of the new ink technology, the relatively low cost of replacement ink cartridges and the duplex printing capability. So far I've been completely satisfied. It's easily fast enough for my use. Print quality is high. It seems to have good color accuracy; I've printed a couple of photos on high quality photo paper and been quite pleased. It was a breeze to install (we are a Mac household). The scan and copy functions are easy to use. Duplex printing is slow but adequate for the times it is used. I've yet to have to replace a cartridge so I can't speak to the cost per page of printing. 198 of 217 people found the following review helpful. HP Ink Rip-Off, Unbelievably Bad Tech Support, Communication Issues, Some Design Improvements over Predecessors By P. Scott Pope Note that ink for this printer will set you back One Hundred and fourteen dollars!!! Before purchasing the Officejet 8500, be aware that there appears to be compatibility issues with the current drivers (as of 5/5/2009) and Windows XP. Basically, the user gets the following error: "The printer has not yet responded, but the Microsoft Office program may be able to proceed without printer information". I have spent hours on the phone with their India-based tech support and with their chat technical support. Sadly, HP provides the worst technical support that I have ever experienced. The telephone reps barely speak English and the chat reps serve multiple customers at the same time, leading to long delays between their responses. Moreover, I have been cut off during chat sessions five times, which leads me to believe it is intentional as this always seems to happen when I attempt to corner them on difficult questions. Before getting cut off today (5/5/2009) the chat technical support rep acknowledged that there are known incompatibilities between the drivers and Windows XP. Presumably, this means the software was written for Vista. Also be aware of the astronomical ink cartridge prices that will set you back half the cost of a new printer. This is the third HP multifunction printer I have purchased. Historically, I have purchased top-of-the-line models from the HP Officejet line for my home office. Generally, I have been rather pleased and impressed with their ability to work for years with few paper jams, either in the printer or document feeder. My primary complaints with HP and these printers are twofold: 1) the ink prices are exorbitant (i.e. pay as you go) and 2) HP has atrocious tech support. The Officejet 8500 appears to have all-around better construction than the other HP Officejet multifunction printers I have owned. Yet it hasn't been without problems. Looking back at my other purchases, it is striking how much prices have come down. Yet HP continues to gouge its customers on ink with the four cartridges costing $[...]+ tax. The first Officejet (d155xi) worked almost flawlessly for three years. I finally decided to sell it when moving. The second Officejet (7310xi) worked extremely well until one day it would not power on. Apparently, something had gone wrong with its main processor. The printer was on a surge protector the entire time, so I have no idea why this happened. I do turn the surge protector off every day before going to work to save electricity as this severs vampire loads from the electrical system. Perhaps the on/off cycles were not good for the printer. After determining the 7310xi was beyond repair, I purchased an Officejet 8500 from HP direct. The printer appears to be well made, but it has problems with communicating with my notebook in addition to having issues with photo printing that have been not fully resolved. The timeline of my

Great printer By Robert Anthony Reis I bought several Epson ink jet printers over the last few years. 80% of the time I was just printing black text, hardly any pictures. Clogged nozzles and high costs for the ink made me move to a LaserJet printer. All was well and then the wife said I could upgrade and go to a color printer. I bought the printer, connected to my 24" iMac directly by USB. I did not install the driver included on the CD but I was still able to add it as a printer. My test print worked fine. I them moved the printer to my Time Capsule and set it up there. Again, my test print worked fine. Now my ball and chain can also print to the printer from her MacBook. I will never go back to an ink jet printer. The print quality is good. My one issue with this printer is that I have not been able to set up some kind of draft setting so that I could save ink. Decent Color Laserjet Printer; Bad HP Customer Service By Motor Head I bought this printer about a year ago upon the recommendation of my local IT support company; they also installed it as a stand alone printer with my Toshiba laptop which has Windows XP. After having dealt with inkjet printers and their cartridges I wanted something more robust and simple to use, hence color laserjet printer Positive points : - it works without any problems and has not jammed yet - Black and white print quality is excellent, color is okay, but for photos it's not anywhere near as good as a good inkjet printer, such as Canon, will do - Speed is okay, but not particularly fast Negative points : - Toner consumption is relatively high, and toners cartridges are very expensive - HP Customer Service consists of trying to sell you additional items; they can't even answer a question about their HP photo paper availability, and they don't have an organized listing of all HP paper formats/qualities - Be aware that you should NOT use photo paper designed for inkjet printers; it will likely melt due to the intense heat of the fuser ! This forces you to buy genuine HP photo paper. This is not even mentioned in the user manual - HP ToolboxFX which is supposed to help you maintain your printer never worked correctly on my laptop. Again, no support is available on HP's website how to make this work - User manual discusses actual print tasks on only 4 pages (out of 154 total pages) : not very comprehensive - Duplex printing can be done, but is not explained in detail It is sad to see that reputable companies, such as HP, have such poor customer service that seems designed to sell you things, not solve customers' problems with a specific product. Yes, HP offers all sorts of free on-line general classes about computers and printers, but very little SPECIFIC product support that is easily accessible 14 of 14 people found the following review helpful. decent printer By Sherri Everything about the printer is good, except the ink cartridges are expensive and it doesn't come with full cartridges. After about 600 copies the machine says I need to purchase another black cartridge. A full cartridge should print 3x that amount. See all 29 customer reviews...

Jack-of-all trades and master of most: a competent home printer By Jojoleb Pros: Effortless set up, even for WiFi Excellent print and photographic quality High quality scanning Faster than older Canon inkjet printers Slick interface/modern design Buffed up Canon software Front loading paper tray Excellent customer support (see addendum) Cons: Memory card reader on WiFi works for Windows but not for Mac Slow wireless 'upload' from printer Shiny exterior picks up fingerprints Completely redesigned ink cartridges means that you are stuck with expensive, proprietary ones, at least for the time being No continuous document feed Long install time for proprietary software Canon software is much better, but still a little slow and clunky The PIXMA MG6120 is one of Cannon's newest line of printers. It is long on features and really is an excellent, all around printer for home use. It was easy to set up using the supplied CD and worked without a hitch on WiFi immediately on set up. The text printing on normal paper is excellent and the photographic reproduction is nearly photo-lab comparable. Note: I am using the printer on an Apple iMac with a 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM (for the truly savvy, this is a 17" MA590LL/A, late 2007 model). I am running OS X 10.6.4 on the Mac side and Windows 7 home edition on Bootcamp. The printer that I am comparing this model to, is my old Canon MX310[Canon Pixma MX310 Office All-in-One Inkjet Printer (2184B002)], bought from Amazon circa 2007. WHAT'S IN THE BOX: The printer is packaged with a quick start up guide, network trouble shooting guide, a starter pack of 6 ink cartridges, power cord, paper for print head alignment, and sample pack of 4 X 6 Canon Plus Glossy II photo paper. Extricating the printer from its box was par for the course, with the usual removal of protective wrapping and unsticking of orange tape. The printer itself weighs in at 20 lbs, so it is somewhat more hefty than it looks and it is by no means petite at 18.6 x 14.5 x 6.9 inches. It sports a small view screen and innovative touch panel that functioned smoothly. It has a pleasing, modern design, and a glossy finish that really looks cool at first, but is a real magnet for fingerprints. SET UP: You hardly need a manual to tell you what to do, as the printer really tells you what to do itself once you turn it on. The carriage centers as you open the device and placing the print head in place is easy. The ink cartridges are color coded and fit in place easily. There is a thick, black cartridge that can only fit in one space, but the color cartridges are otherwise identical. They will fit into each other's slots, but there is a guide on the print head that makes placement a no brainer. As each cartridge is equipped with its own microchip, my guess is that the printer would inform you of any errors in placement. (Not wanting to mess up the color printing for the first runs, I stuck with the program and didn't let the machine prime the ink tanks while placed in the wrong slots.) Once closed, the machine quickly cleans the print heads and then prompts you to place the photographic paper in the back loading slot for print head alignment. A few minutes later, this is done. Plain paper can then be loaded in the front cassette or in the rear loading slot, and you're off to the races. WARNING!: A word about the ink tanks--these are a brand new style. This means that it will be some time before refurbished or third party cartridges are available for use. Although brand new Canon ink cartridges are likely to function the best, other options do significantly decrease the price per page and not everyone needs 100% full quality prints or an archival photo that will not fade in `300 years.' My hubby and I jumped when we saw this printer: just had to get it! The print is as good as on the 11x17 HP inkjet at work, and this 11x17 scanner is a better size than any of the workplace ones (although I haven't used that function yet). Hubby managed to hook up the 6490 to our home wifi without help, and no, he didn't set our wifi up originally, and no, he doesn't really understand how wifi works. In fact, hubby is visually handicapped! I'd rate ease of installation to wifi as 5 stars. The only glitch we had was that we didn't know we had a firewall, but the install disc talked us though that step too. So now I'm sitting in bed typing on my Dell 1520 XP and sending to the printer in the other room. I don't know how it goes through ink, but will post back if I have an issue about that or anything else in the future. Edit added 9-6-08: We just changed the first ink cartridge. I've been printing mainly with black, but also did about 300 very small (2"x3") photos with lots of sky. We managed 700 copies on the first black cartridge as far as I can tell. Cyan is at 50% and magenta and yellow don't really show as being low yet. The machine has been beeping for the last week warning us black was low, but only today did it quit printing due to lack of ink. The last page it did was as good as the first, so I have to wonder exactly how low that ink was when it quit on us. At any rate: we had no wasted prints from low ink and it was nice enough to tell us it had stopped. Can't say that with the HP at work! 90 of 93 people found the following review helpful. Very good overall. By Edgar Tovar I didn't actually buy the printer from Amazon. I bought this hulking device at Office Depot because it came with a $100 rebate. But the overall list price is definitely worth it. I mostly got it because it has a large area scanner that I need for my pencil work. Listing the features would be useless since there is already a description of what it does above. So i'll go over the pros and cons. Pros -Very large scanner. Largest i've seen at an affordable price and common availability. -LCD screen. Decent resolution and overall the right size. -Interface. It is very easy to navigate through menus and do what you want. -Wi-Fi. Truly a god-sent. We have 4 computers at home hooked up to this puppy. -Large print outs. 11x17. Woo! -Fast scanning at multiple resolutions. Cons -Software. The package comes bundled with a picture and scanning software. It is overall very slow and I had to reinstall it a couple times because of how unstable it was. This was however on a mac. It might work fine on windows. But it's not mandatory to have it, and if your serious about your work you use other software anyway. -Print quality. Not the best in the world i'll admit. Colors aren't as saturated as I would have liked. I don't know if it not being a laser printer has anything to do with it. -Big and bulky. Consider your home or office space before spending your hard earned cash on this one. It's not a space saver, i'll tell you that much. -The text on the LCD screen can a times be very small. Not a problem for me, but can sometimes be a problem for older people. (my parents) -Printing process can take a while over a wi-fi network. Not painfully long, but enough to take notice. Not applicable -Fax function because I have yet to use it. For me there were three major factors in making this purchase. Scanning in large sketches, printing large documents, and wi-fi. If your only going to print on standard 8.5x11 then go for something cheaper. But for an artist like me who needs a larger scanner and appreciates all the extra stuff that comes with it, I could not think of anything better for the price. 123 of 130 people found the following review helpful. Load up the drivers and away you go - at least with Mac - and through Airport. Other reviews make a fair point about being a bit noisy - I have it sitting on a fairly hollow wooden cupboard which may accentuate this issue. However for usual home printing regime I can't see this being a big issue for most. 21 of 23 people found the following review helpful. Lemon of a printer By Scott P. Costello Perhaps HP has had a bad run of late, but our first printer worked for 2 weeks before it started jamming. The replacement worked for 2 days before it started jamming. We opted to not try a third and went with another manufacturer, I would say avoid this printer until they iron out their feeding issues. 24 of 27 people found the following review helpful. Good, but Jasu, the printer cartridge! By Benedict I have had this printer for several months and have only recently been printing stuff on a regular basis. The cartridge says it is good for 2300 pages, and that goes by quickly. The replacement cost is $83+ dollars, which is nearly half the cost of the printer. That is roughly 3.6 cents a page. I suppose this is okay, but $83 seems high to me. Must be fantastic technology involved. Otherwise the printer works very fine. See all 43 customer reviews...
