But, this morning I was moved to review the HP LJ 4700 when I printed out the "Usage Page"; Wow.The report says we've run 229,567 letter sized sheets through this printer since we started using it some 5 or 6 years ago. All of the paper that goes through it is 85 pound stuff used in mailings, and all of the printed materials are color. I'm sure I'll jinx the reliability by saying all this, but, up to now, we've not had any problems other than stuff that was traced back to the refurb cartridges we use almost exclusively.I might also mention that it has been used by about 5 different people in our company and some of us slam it around a pretty good bit. It will be in heavy use for months at a time, then will sit idle for months. And, of course, we use refurbished cartridges of who-knows-what kind of origin. In short, we use it hard much of the time.I must say that I'd seriously consider replacing it with another 4700 rather than go to a new model, if I had to replace this one. The refurbs for sale here are cheap. No, I don't have any relationship to HP. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. 3r By 3R Saves great printer, we have been wanting one for a while, great priceproduct as described 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Excellent Printer, Workhorse. By Paul Coyne We have three of these printers in our offices. They are reliable, dependable, and quick. The ink cartridges last a long time. The only downsize is the printer is big and heavy. Excellent for text, reports, newsletters, where multiple copies are required. See all 4 customer reviews...

By A Customer I printed a lot of photos with my old 895cse printer, and they looked great, but the ink could smear and it took forever. I recently bought this printer, and it is fantastic, clean and crisp prints... and full color in the same time it takes to print a text page, about 20 seconds. And you don't have to replace the cartridge every other week, so far it's been 3 months and I haven't changed the toner yet. I say if you can afford this now, it will pay off in the long run. 26 of 29 people found the following review helpful. Craftspeople Need the Best Tools By Dan Poynter The HP-4550 Color LaserJet Printer is a great tool.We live in a color world. Our television, magazines and newspapers are in full color. It only makes sense to be able to reproduce what we see on our computer screen in color. Black/White output is only a poor representation, not an accurate reproduction.Since many people are considering trading up from a LaserJet 4 as I did, I will compare the two. The 4550 is heavier. You will need two people carry it and to move it from its shipping carton to a table. The 4550 is larger. Check the measurements. Make sure you have room for it.The 4550 is noisier but the fan shuts off after a few minutes of nonuse and it goes into a sleep mode after 30 minutes (adjustable). The 4550 is slower. It is first-page-out rated at 26 seconds in b/w while the HP-4050 is rated at 13 seconds. The printer cable is rather short. You may need an extension. If you have a small office and require more speed, you may be better off with an HP-4050 (b/w) printer and a small color inkjet printer. The manual is excellent, the setup is easy and the color is great. As a publisher, author of 26 Books, 109 revised editions, six translations and over 500 magazine articles as well as a consultant to the book publishing industry, I spend a lot of time using my computer. I need the best tools. The 4550 is a great tool. DanPoynter@ParaPublishing.com. 13 of 13 people found the following review helpful. A Color Laserjet that is Commercially Viable to Inkjet By Todd M. Hess I broke down and purchased an HP Color Laserjet 4550 in March (my yearly bonus paid out!). While it required my teenage son and myself to lug it into the house (it is rather lofty in size), setup was simple and the quality and durability of prints cannot even be compared to an inkjet printer.Prior to purchasing the 4550, I owned three color inkjet products and have never been satisfied with the final prints. Even if you could get the prints to look good right out of the printer, their durability (ink smears, color degradation, etc.) certainly suffered. How to justify a rather sizeable purchase? Save your money and don't buy the poor reliability from color ink jet printers not to even mention the cost of the cartridges (but note you will have to anticipate the costly replacement of the four toner cartridges used in the 4550 laserjet eventually). Also, purchase a nice card maker software package (I use Hallmark Card Studio 2) and some good laserjet photo paper, and you can easily justify the cost of this color laserjet.I wish I would have never bought into the color inkjets and waited for this nearly affordable color laserjet instead. Great machine, but CHEWS through ink cartridges $$$ By Ellen Beebee We love this printer and haven't had a problem with it. Makes great scans, was easy to network in and run wirelessly, prints well and reasonably fast, good fax. BUT it chows ink cartridges AND it uses the color cartridges even when you are only printing in black, which is very strange to me. My magenta is almost gone, but I haven't printed more than one small color doc ( a coupon!) in ages. Always print black. Something's fishy. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Much more expensive to operate than PC World magazine's reviews say By Bart L. Schairer After reading numerous reviews in PC World that rated the HP 8500 wireless All-in-One as one of the best printers around we decided to buy one. One of the key selling points in PC World's review was that the cost of ink was very low for this printer - so we thought that the $400 price (in January 2010) would be worth it. Were we ever wrong!Pros:The print quality is very good. The page per minute rate is excellent. The wireless makes it easy to set up for all the computers in the house. It makes wonderful copies and scans well. We never used the fax function but that could be really handy if you needed that.Cons:The ink cartridges for this printer are VERY expensive! And even if you only print in black the printer uses a bit of color to 'maintain print quality' with every print, so you use color ink anyway. Worst of all is that if any of the 4 ink cartridges run dry you CANNOT PRINT ANYTHING - even if you're trying to print in black only! So you have to keep $100-$200 worth of ink on hand at all times or you're out of business! Forget printing envelopes with this printer - you might as well hand write them, because it WON'T feed them straight even if you try guiding them in by hand.AND that isn't even the worst of it! Just after the 1 year warranty ran out the cyan ink tube kinked and cracked, leaking blue ink all over the printer. You wouldn't think this would be a big deal - I thought I might even take it apart and replace the tube myself. But I thought I'd contact HP first to see what they'd say before I messed it up...They had me search for a local repair 'partner'. I found one, called them, and was told they only repair the laserjets and that my All-in-One Officejet is unserviceable. HP is offering me an 'upgrade option' where I trade this one in for a refurbished one at a discounted price, but my wife has since bought an HP 110 Photosmart ($75 online, shipping included) that doesn't use as much ink and has much cheaper ink cartridges. I may just stick with the 110 and pull my 8500 apart (it's basically worthless anyway) and see if I can put a new plastic tube on it and get it to work. This all has me very upset because I'm STILL using my HP 722C from 15 years ago on my old PC and it works GREAT! I can't use it on my new PC because new PCs don't come with parallel ports anymore.I've never had problems with an HP printer before, but I can't really recommend this one. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A great paperweight By Chris M. I've had this printer for 14 months now and this product is an embarrassment to HP. Here are what I've found for pros and cons:Pros:1) When the wireless works (see #3 below), it's great. Print and scan over my home network!Cons:1) It's on a constant ink bender - I use this for a home office and buy XL cartridges every other month.2) Startup and shutdown times are incredibly long and there's a printhead cleaning with every startup (see #1 above).3) There's been an ongoing issue where the computer cannot find the printer over my home wireless network. The only solution to this is completely uninstalling the software and reinstalling it. This week, with the warranty recently expired, the WiFi card in the printer has completely stopped working and I now have a big paperweight.4)

Quit working in less than month, three weeks later still not fixed By Rice EEB Worked good for the first week, then the formatter went bad and we were instructed to take it to the local authorized repair shop. Three weeks later we're still waiting for the part. HP customer support is non existent. After three weeks agreed to accept a refurbished replacement but wanted a 1 year warranty, if the refurbished is just as good shouldn't they stand behind it as well? HP said no go and wanted me to pay to ship the refurbished printer. So if you want a printer that doesn't work and like to spend hours on the phone with tech and customer support, buy this printer. Barrett I almost never write a review, but the forest of multi-functions is so thick and I am so impressed by my Brother DCP-7020 that I figure I ought to share my personal view of this tremendous small office/home-office machine.I spent weeks researching and testing multi-functions, going back and forth among Brother, HP, Sharp, Xerox, Canon, and others. What a nightmare, sorting out and comparing all the rival features! My own needs were straight-forward: truly excellent, professional-looking B&W laser printing and copying capability; reliable paper-path routing with few or no jams; able to handle periodic high volume and otherwise steady daily use; large paper tray capacity; reliable Auto Document Feeder; handy and roomy output tray; acceptable color as well as B&W scanning; and reasonably priced laser supplies that have a reasonably high volume capacity. While I had no need for fax or networking, I might have taken either or both if the quality of the more important features I sought warranted the extra price. I also was hoping for a stand-alone copying capability, just to give me more flexibility in office machinery since I also have a Brother HL-5150DLT (which is a tremendous stand-alone printer, by the way!)Several times I almost decided on the Sharp AL-1641CS or its equivalent at Canon and Xerox. My initial misgivings about the latest Brother multifunction machines came down to three things: I was concerned about a few reports of modest paper curling; I was nervous about the paper output slot which seemed at first glance kind of puny and inconveniently located at the inside front, rather than outside to the side, of the machine; and the Brother multi-function machines somehow didn't look to me quite as robust or strong as some of their competitors, at least as they sat on the store shelf.Repeated testing in multiple stores convinced me that the Brother DCP-7020 was the most likely to meet my needs at an initial price (and also a lower laser cartridge supplies price) so substantially less than the Sharp or equivalents that I decided to 'chance' it, as I thought. It turned out far, far better than I had hoped. This is a GREAT workhorse machine that takes up substantially less work space and yet turns out excellent laser printing and/or copying with sharp, professional-looking text. Reliable, smooth paper handling with no paper jams to speak of (other than one deliberately caused for testing, which was very easily cleared). Superior copying capability (stand-alone or attached to a computer.) And, though not my top priority, very good scanning as well, supported by excellent, intuitive software. The earlier review and product descriptions you can read at Amazon.com are accurate. This machine is awesome; the best buy for the money you will find, unless you need faxing capability or color printing in your multi-function. As for my original misgivings, here's my experience:(1) Paper curling. Not a problem! The paper curling reports are true but greatly exaggerated. Very, very minor curling occurs (probably due to the extreme heat needed for any laser printing), but the paper flattens quickly as it cools and in a minute or so you won't even know it had a slight curl as it emerged from the machine.(2) Output tray. Not a problem! True, the output slot at the front of the machine looks a little inconvenient or insubstantial, but that turns out to be a mirage, probably because we are so accustomed to expecting to see a bulky exterior separate output tray. The Brother DCP-7020 output tray actually is an innovation. It works perfectly and can hold up to 100 pages, no problem. Lift the lid below the copier and you will see you have access to the entire output tray in all its glory.(3) The wrong-est I was in my initial misgivings was in thinking that visually the Brother DCP-7020 looked somehow more fragile, or less robust, than

It's also the first flatbed device I have gotten. Its relatively small footprint was also a selling point. My use is light home office and personal use - short work-related text documents, recipes for wife, color pictures the kids make, simple copying tasks, and for sending and receiving short faxes.Set-up - a little bit involved as far as setting it up for wireless on my somewhat old netgear router. Still it found my network, and entering the security key was fairly straightforward. It would be nice if its mac address was more obvious. It might be hard for a total novice to hook this up to wireless unless s/he were running an open and unsecure network. While the box touts its wireless capability, the instructions time and time again recommend using usb or Cat5 connection for best results. Rather disturbing they would choose to discourage you from actually using a feature they tout so prominently on its packaging. I had to turn off the computer's firewall for it to find the printer on the network the first time. You have to use the install disk on every computer you want to enable to access this printer. But I got it working, and all connected computers can find it and print to it. Nice to cut down on a single wire (usb or LAN), but you still have a power cord and a phone-in and phone-out cord so you still have a heavily wired set-up.Features - the LCD screen is a nice touch and it folds up so you can see it from different angles. It has card reader slots so you can print directly from flash memory cards. The print quality is just so-so. I easily could see the grain on text; on graphics the colors bleed a little. Even using photo paper the results are not satisfactory for printing photos. It has individual ink cartridges which is a plus, and they are very elegantly and easily accessed from the front of the machine. Can't comment on ink cartridge duration yet. I like to refill my own cartridges especially black, but don't know yet if these are amenable to after-market ink refilling. Print speed is a little slow for color, and adequate for text. You can load up to 100 sheets in the cartridge easily accessed at the front of the machine. As a scanner, the resolution certainly should be adequate for most home user tasks, but i found the colors of scanned photos lack vibrancy. This could perhaps be touched up using photo-editing software. After getting a question, i checked it out and you can indeed scan to PDF format - just set up a custom scan program.Other - It has a built in phone handset and answering machine which are a nice touch if you also want to get rid of a separate phone/answering machine. In retrospect the phone is almost useless to me. You can set the machine to answer faxes only, or phone calls also. The PC fax is a great feature, and you can create a cover page in a snap - all you do is "Print" and select PC-fax from the drop-down menu. Unfortunately you can't preview your scanned fax before sending. I have not received a fax yet, but you are able to save these faxes directly as computer documents - not sure which format yet but another great saver of paper and time. I haven't tried the document feeder yet but if it works for a few pages without a jam, i'll be delighted.I've not owned a brother brand printer before; I hope it lasts as long as previously owned canon and Xerox devices I've had. For its price, I'm satisfied but not blown away.UPDATE:It's BrokenI bought all this Brother ink and now it doesn't work.Upon starting the machine there is a grating sound as if plastic gears are turning against resistance and then the "Paper Jam" message

Easy Set up...once you get the right Drivers By Glass Audio lover I looked for a replacement for my Canon MultiPass F50 and needed a Mac-compatible printer that has Ethernet connectivity, an auto-document feeder, and could print 4x6 photos. It came down to this versus the Canon MP830. I chose the HP since the Canon lacked an Ethernet interface.PRO's:First, the unit is very attractive and matches the style of my Mac Mini. Second, it has both an Ethernet and WiFi built in, which is great for sharing it amongst all the computers in our house, both Mac and PC. Third, it has a built in slot to hold 4x6 photoprints, which it prints directly from a camera or PC or memory card. Fourth, it has ADF, which is great when you have 10+ pages to fax and hate to feed them in one by one. Fifth, print quality looks great, nearly the same as the Canon 830. Sixth, I got it super cheap at Costco for $239 (they were running a rebate). Seventh, the unit is smaller than most multi-function printers, Eighth, it has a little color LCD for viewing prints off a memory card.Cons:It cannot scan 35mm slides (which the Canon is able to). Also, unlikely that it scans an 8.5x14 document. The print cartridges do not look like they can be manually refilled with ink kits (not that this is always a good idea). The included Mac software was wrong (it was for a 7100 series), so make sure you visit the HP site and download the right software, then it installs easy. Once I had the right software, it took me no time to configure it on a network with 2 Mac Mini's. Lastly, print cartridges are not exactly a bargain: the color ones are $10 ea (you need 5) and the black ink ones are $18 ea. The cartridges look really small, so it will be interesting to see how much print output I get. Buy refills at costco, where they are $56 for a complete set, and $46 for 3 black cartridges.I'll play with it more, but so far, I am impressed it with the speed and quality, and the cost versus features is simply unbeatable. Especially if you are a Mac user, finding a Ethernet and wifi enabled multi-function printer with ADF is pretty much impossible at this price. 35 of 38 people found the following review helpful. HP Photosmart C6150 All-in-One Printer By F. Valerio This is an excellent all in one (AIO) printer. By far the feature I like the best is the support for 802.11g wireless networking. It does come with a built in 802.3 Ethernet card also which I may use if I move the printer closer to the router. Since I have a wireless network already setup connecting with the AIO was a snap. I loaded the software that came with the C6150. It ask you how you want to connect to the printer. You have three options (1)CAT 5 cable-Ethernet, (2)Wireless and (3)USB cable-which by the way is included in the box. Once the software was installed I had to enter my encryption key and SSID using the printer front panel. You do have an option to use the Easysetup button that comes with most Linksys routers now. I like configuring things manually but you do have the option to use a wizard if you like. I ran a test from the front panel and a report printed out showing everything PASSED and was working fine. I also ran a FAX test after connecting my phone line to it. So now I can send a fax using my wireless connection through the router which then passes the FAX information to the C6150 which then sends it out my telephone line (pretty cool). I don't want to call this a printer because it is much more than that. It also has a built in memory card reader which reads all the different format: CompactFlash Type I and II, IBM Microdrive, Memory Stick, Memory Stick Duo (adapter not included, purchase separately), mini-SD (adapter not included, purchase separately), Secure Digital/MultiMediaCard, xD-Picture Card This machine prints incredible photos on the 4 x 6 glossy paper that it comes with. Also has a separate tray for the 4 x 6

I ended up purchasing the Canon 4690. The Canon 4690 is very easy to install, configure, and network. All settings can be configured via a handy web interface. The unit is very fast, quiet, and ergonomic. Warm up time is better than expected. With a small footprint, this Canon fits nicely in any home/office setting. From a hardware perspective, this unit meets and exceeds all comparable units out there on the market. Where most multifunction units have only 32 to 64 MB of RAM, it appears that this unit has 128 MB - although for some reason, you won't see this documented. I learned this from printing out my 4690's configuration page. In any event, more memory is very nice for those large print jobs. Networking and printer installation is a snap. The paper handling is convenient. Printing, copying, faxing, and scanning are ridiculously easy with the Canon 4690. Believe me; I looked at Dell, Epson, HP, Lexmark, and even other Canon models. Bottom line: The Canon 4690 offers the most technology for this price level. 24 of 24 people found the following review helpful. Solid construction and feature-laden unit By GoBlueFan I shopped for a week and looked at Brother, HP, and Samsung B/W laser multifunctional printers before picking this Canon multifunctional unit. Set up was very easy, until I got to connecting it to the network via a Cat5e cable. Canon says the unit will automatically pick up the IP address, subnet mask, and gateway address using DHCP, but a call to Canon Tech Services recommended manual entry of these values. The tech walked me through the procedure, so now all my PC's connected to my router can use the printer. I highly recommend Canon Tech Services. They have a 12-hour toll-free number and offer lifetime free telephone support.Pluses:1. Speedy printing2. Backlit LCD screen3. The MF4690 has a neat remote Web page User Interface for reviewing and changing printer/fax/copier/scanner settings.4. Text prints are very sharp (compared with those from my HP LaserJet 1200)Negatives:1. Comes with "starter" toner cartridge2. Another negative (not prominently mentioned) is that the unit will NOT support network scanning. You must be connected via USB to do scanning to e-mail and scanning to a file server. However, you CAN perform scanning to a USB thumb drive and it outputs as PDF, JPG, or BMP files.Update: I was told by Canon Tech Services that you can connect with both USB and Network connections at the same time, thus you have the full-range of scanning options with this printer (via USB) and still get the benefits of network connections.Update #2: After reading some of the HP printer reviews, I am glad that Canon support is USA-based, so there is no language barrier. 54 of 62 people found the following review helpful. Mac User BEWARE!!!! By Bryan C. Swoboda First of all let me say that if you're a PC user, read all the other reviews of this unit. It really is a nice unit with all the features described. The reason I'm giving it two stars is because of what I feel is Canon's intentional misleading of the public when they claim that this is Mac compatible. From the box to the manual to the website, Canon uses the Mac logo to communicate that this unit is Mac compatible. This is only PARTIALLY true. This unit works ONLY as a printer and fax with the Macs - NOT A SCANNER. No where is this ever communicated. Even the printed manual and the Advanced Manual that is provided as a PDF on an included CD make any mention of the fact that you can not use this as a scanner on a Mac. Furthermore, Canon has no plans on ever making a driver so that you can do scans on a Mac. It's not bad that the unit can't do Mac scanning but I'd rather know about that BEFORE I purchase it and set it up at home. See all 34 customer reviews...

The other reviews that I have seen ignore a few things about this printer. First off, any wide format printer is going to use a lot of ink. Find the ink kits and learn how to refill your cartridges. It'll save you a ton of money. The cartridges may be small, compared to some other printers, but they are quite refillable, much more so than the larger HP cartridges I have used in the past. The printer manufacturers don't want you to know about that. I know as I have been refilling the same cartridges this printer uses for 2 years already. Having had experience with my HP Deskjet 5550, I have only purchased one extra cartridge in the last 2 years. I finally wore out the #57 Tricolor cartridge. This printer comes with all 3 of them. My 5550 only came with 2.Secondly. if you use the maximum dpi setting, the printer is slow. But I have found that the best setting is excellent, at 600 by 600 dpi, it takes about 5 minutes to do a 12 by 18 inch print. Unless you have a 14 megapixel camera. this print resolution is beyond your 5 megapixel camera to begin with. And, if you have a source that can generate a true 4800 dpi print, I have seen a review that states that it is worth the wait. I believe the claim.Since I bought the printer, I have only been able to get my hands on 12 by 18 inch plain paper,(an artist's sketch pad at Wal Mart). The results on this paper are stunning. I can't wait to get a hold of some Super B 13 by 19 inch glossy. One of the reasons I prefer this type of printer over the likes of Canon and Epson, which both make printers of this type, is the ability to refill the cartridges. Don't try it with theirs. Once you clog the print head, it'll cost you more than the printers worth to replace it. The HP's have the print head built into the cartridge, so if it ends up bad, you just need a new cartridge. The only reason I can think of not to buy this printer is if you don't want to be bothered with refilling the cartridges. They can be refilled up to 18 or more times.I picked this unit up as a factory recertified unit that came with the full 1 year warranty, for half the list price of the HP msrp. Just a guess on my part, but I think a lot of these were sent back due to issues with the XP drivers that had some flaws. I can't find a disagreeable issue with this printer and I have had it for a week now and have printed a couple of dozen 12 by 18 inch prints, using both the new and my own refilled cartridges.By the way, I also use Windows ME, like a reviewer below. But I won't end up with the same issues of the ink warnings, because I know how to fool the printers cartridge memory. It can only remember 2 of the same carts, and it's easy to find the info on how to reset the ink level indicators. As far as the scrapbooker below, he must not have set up this printer properly. The photo results are incredible,on plain paper, even with just the black and tricolor cartridges. I have used an HP 1220c also, and I can say that this printer is better on photos than the 1220c. However, each person has their own views, and also their own ways of trying things out. This printer has a lot of options. Be sure to check them out. The auto settings work very well, but you have to select things like the "Best" setting. You can custom establish your favorite settings as default in the toolbox. Otherwise it might do a fast draft print, which sounds like the corrugated cardboard complaint below. So far, I highly recommend this one. I've always wanted a printer that I could frame a print and view it from across the room, or from the next room for that matter, and not need to walk over to figure out what it is a picture of. These prints are large enought to satisfy that desire, you won't beleive the difference, compared to an 8.5 by 11.5 inch print. Now, if I don't run out of wall space

This printer is the best overall quality machine I have experienced By Neoteric Expressions Our main concerns with purchasing a color laser printer for our graphic design business were the quality of prints and long term cost of ownership. This printer is well worth the price considering the quality of prints you get. We mainly use it for in house invitations and business stationery, so output of text and graphics in a high quality and efficient manner was important. This printer even on its lowest quality setting still prints crisp and clear with no dithering, and the speed of the printer is outstanding. On high quality printing, our per sheet cost averages about 16 to 20 cents per sheet, so we don't typically get the standard number of pages that the descriptions say you'd get per toner cartridge. Then again, we use 107# card stock quite often in our work with 30% or more coverage per sheet. Also, it does not feed these types of thick sheets automatically, they must be hand-fed one by one; BUT, I believe any printer would need to have them hand fed since that type of card stock is pretty heavy and tends to 'drag' across the other sheet, which in turns creates too much resistance for the printer to handle. This could delay any large order. The printer turns out about a sheet every 4 seconds when hand-fed, even faster when the machine feeds itself, but again we are graphic designers printing on heavy card stock most of the time. I have just gone through my first set of cartridges and I got about 5000 papers / envelopes / card stocks combined before replacement. Of course, I wish the toner was cheaper but it's about the average price for this style of printer. The only concern I have is that, with delays between orders and the stretch of time the printer sleeps (3-4 days), the color registration consistently needs to be calibrated in order to ensure a quality print each and every order. This also needs to be completed between every 50 to 100 prints when printing in high quality text, otherwise there is a red tint around the letters and darker graphics - this could be an issue with clients who want better than what they can get at home on their inkjet. No amount of fixes that I found on search engines solved this issue for me, so you have to be sure to calibrate the color registration regularly at the beginning of each order and throughout the order.I tested several printers at a local printer sales company before deciding on the Ricoh, mostly due to my prior experience with commercial grade Ricoh's, and because this printer had the quality that it says it has with the speed and reliability we need as graphic designers. I only wish we had gotten the wide format Ricoh - and we will once we grow the business some more. 9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Big with beautiful quality prints and low cost toner By B. Humphrey Purchased this printer for business presentations. The output quality and speed are impressive. So is the size. It looks like it belongs in a corporate office. Placed on a 30" table top, it's up to your arm pits. We haven't owned this printer for long but we love what we see so far.Printing cost is at least rated lower than just about any color laser (< 5cents color). Speed is up there with any other printer in this price range. I actually broke a small plastic piece in the paper tray. The warranty repair person was there the same day I called (the part didn't keep it from working). The printer has an automatic standby and sleep mode which reduce power use (Sleep is 6w, standby 100w). While it's printing, it'll dim your lights. We have a modern house and the lights really do dim during printing runs.Other than the part in the paper tray, the printer is well made. The only other negative I can mention is the stock toner tubes are 3000 pages which are pretty small. It may be typical to include lightly loaded cartridges but

Fast. Power savings mode uses only 5 watts.Cons: This printer is not supported for Windows 7, 64 bit. The print cartridges count the number of copies printed and are empty after 6000 copies. Print cartridge prices were raised when new printer models were released. The fuser needed replacement. There is no windows 7 support and HP could not get my printer to work over my home network after I bought a new Windows 7, 64 bit computer. The print cartridges count the number of copies printed and are done when 6000 pages are printed. HP greatly raised the list price on cartridges after they came out with a newer model. Printing envelopes causes fuser errors and I had to buy a separate new fuser for $200 for use with envelopes. The old fuser still works great with regular paper. Envelopes are slightly damaged when printing. HP support (telephone and online) only last for a short time after purchase and then they want money to not fix your problems. My printer was manufactured in January 2007 and I am really surprised that it is not supported by HP and can not run Windows 7, 64 bit as of August 2010. I expected to use this printer for many years and now must phase it out as I move towards Windows 7, 64 bit. See all 1 customer reviews...

Martin After searching a number of reviews from users, magazines, and other sources I finally decided to replace my 12 year old LaserJet 5, and two color inkjet printers with the HP 3600dn. I actually ordered a refurbished one. The hardest part about setting up this printer was lifting it out of the box. At over 60 pounds, it is not something you are going to just move around on a whim. This printer works fine under Linux. I connected it to the LAN using the ethernet cable and loaded the HPIJS package on my system for the printer driver (available from your favorite distribution source), told CUPS (v1.3.4) to find new printers, and it worked.Print quality is great, just remember that this is not a photo printer. It does a good job with pictures, but it is not meant to compete against the super high resolution printers that can print on photopaper. The built in duplexer works well and saves a lot of trouble when you want to print a large double sided document. This is not a quiet printer, it makes a fair amount of noise while it is working. It sounds a lot like a large copy machine. This is no problem for most office environments, but it might be suprising if you are used to smaller inkjet printers. The tipping point in choosing this machine over some of the much cheaper models available was the overall cost of ownership. Over the long term this printer will cost less per page for both color and black&white printing than many of the less expensive printers out there. Check out the figures on Tom's Hardware: http://www.tomshardware.com/2007/02/02/color_laser_printers_2/page9.htmlThe question really comes down to your expected print volume.Edit - 2/6/09After over a year of operation this printer is still doing a great job. 7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. If noise is no problem, here's your color printer! By Jack Purchased to be a general printer this one works well. Great Printer for a busy office By Shirley Martinez This a a really great printer for our office. It is a little load when it is printing but the quality over shadows the noise.Wireless connection to the printer wa pretty easy. We have 4 offices that print to it with out any problem. It holds a good amount of paper and the duplexor has been great to use as well.Color pages are great as long as you are not trying to print photos on photo paper. It doesn't do so great in that department.Fast and reliable is what we were looking for and that is what we got. See all 8 customer reviews...

Armstrong I bought this printer after a search for an ideal color laser printer for home. My wife needs to print in color for her cirriculum and I need to print on both sides of the page to save weight when sending out mailings. This printer does both and does them both well.In case this is your first time to the rodeo, LED printers are like laser printers but instead of using a laser beam and a mirror there is a fixed array of LEDs which perform the same function. The claim is that this will reduce maintenance but I have never heard of anyone claiming "well, my laser printer was great, but then the laser died." or "well, if only the mirror assembly hadn't broken in my laser printer..." - no, usually it's something to do with the drum, the fuser, constant jams, toner costs, etc. So I'm not sure LED printers are better than laser printers, but I took the plunge anyway. So, about this printer. So it uses a grid of LEDs. In practice, the resolution is a little worse than a laser printer, but 600x1200 dpi is plenty respectable for print work. I haven't even considered the resolution at any point in operating it.The paper passes through a singular path, meaning that it doesn't really change print speed based on whether it's b/w or color, which is nice. I was surprised to print a full-page color photo in the same time it takes to print a text file. Generally speaking, that's not common (try that on an inkjet!)The printer comes with 1000-page toner cartridges, which are "starter" sized. Price per page is not significantly cheaper than an inkjet, after you factor in the costs of toner, but I've always found inkjet printers to be frustrating to deal with, for print speed, frequency of ink changes, dried cartridge nozzles, noisy feed/print mechanisms, and so on. So, this is a lot better than an inkjet in my book, but not for economy printing. The duplexing is the standard "cheaper" method that requires the page to partially come out of the printer, then it sucks it back in for a second go-round. Nicer workgroup printers keep the document entirely internalized until it has printed on both sides. Still, it works fine and there's plenty of room for it to do its thing and keep all the pages in order. It's a great feature to have when you need it.The color quality isn't as good as an inkjet. If you want to print photos, you really would be better off simply ordering them online (just upload your jpegs, and so on) and getting them printed on $20,000+ professional printers for pennies. I think a 4x6 photo print is less than 10 cents, so buying an inkjet is just a waste of time in my book. Anyway, this printer is acceptable for all display/presentation work. It's just not color accurate. They package software to attempt to correct the color, but this is unlikely to get it to "professional photo printer" levels anyway.Black and white is great, as it should be. No complaints there. No paper jams to report, and the whole printer seems easy to clear if there was a problem. There is no wireless networking, only a 100mbit (no gigabit, but why would you need it?) ethernet port and a USB port.Networking is simple and you can point a browser to the IP address to get status and even submit jobs manually if you don't have a print driver installed (it lets you upload a pdf and print it out). Having a networked printer is great so you don't need to have a computer on (though mine is on all the time anyway) if you want others to have access to printing.Power consumption is like other laser printers. It's significant when warming up, not too bad when printing, and very low when idle. Warm up time is only a few seconds, which is great. The printer is a bit heavy/bulky, but it's about the size of a larger all-in-one fax/copy/print machine (though it doesn't fax/copy). It weighs about 55lbs.Overall, I'd give it 5 stars. It fit my

Canavan Having used this printer extensively for one year I have come to the conclusion that it is the best printer I have ever owned. Picture quality is superb; really, really good for a laser. This printer is large and heavy, but that seems to be related to it's paper handling capabilities. The printer is totally quiet until you print, then it warms up instantly and prints very fast. Print quality is very consistent, every time. The printer is used for office documents and small runs of promotional literature and works flawlessly. When you use the HP 4005dn you get the feeling this printer can handle way more than your throwing at it; this printer has "depth". There are cheaper, smaller units...but when you have a deadline and you need a bullet proof solution that does a great job, every time - this is it. The only draw back would be the price of the toner, which is a little high for volume printing. See all 1 customer reviews...

Schick Pros:-Samsung packs a lot of value into their machines. I paid about $50 less than it is currently going for here.-Network scanning actually works well!; unlike many network MFPs.(Buying a standalone network scanner that works this well would cost more than this machine-though it does not have auto duplex scanning like some costlier devices)-Direct to USB scanning and direct from USB printing might be useful for some.-Duplex printing works well and saves paper- more mid-range printers should come with this feature.(note: if you have ever used a printer with duplexing capabilities before you will have no trouble enabling this feature.)-Most setting are easily configurable with the web interface so that you need not scroll through multiple menus on the machine itself.-Has powerful scan to email features usually only found on high end office machines.-Handles standard envelopes better than I expected.Cons:-Samsung documentation is not for the uninitiated.-By default it installs some not very useful programs (a quicklaunch toolbar and a printer status monitor)-Does not support Postscript (you need to pay a little extra for the Samsung SCX-4828 Laser Multi-Function Printerfor this feature- that's the only difference between them).-For some strange reason you cannot scan to B&W PDF directly from the machine. You can scan to color or grayscale PDF, or you can scan to B&W PDF from your computer, but not directly from the machine. No idea why.-Generally, MFPs do not last as long as regular printers, and are a pain to fix if they break. Think of it this way: If the chance of a printer breaking within 3 years is 1/100, and the chance of a scanner breaking is 1/100, then the chance of a MFP breaking is 1/50.Workarounds:-If you connect this to your computer via USB (presumably you bought this for its network capabilities so you would normally have it connected via Ethernet) you can flash the device with the firmware from the 4828FN to enable postscript emulation. This will undoubtedly void your warranty. You can then manually install the 4828FN postscript printer driver and configure it to print to the correct port. (The only reason I did this is because samsung previously had incorrectly listed this machine as having PS support before I bought it)-If you only need network scanning and printing (not faxing) and do your scanning with programs you already have (such as Acrobat or Omnipage) then I highly recommend installing only the printer and scanner drivers and forgetting about the rest.-A generally good idea with network printers is to configure them to use a static IP address (outside the normally assigned range) even if your network is running on DHCP. This will potentially avoid many headaches down the line.Bottom Line: A great value if you know what you need and know what you are doing. 10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Great looking printouts and auto duplexing! By J. Roach I agree with the reviewer from May - great little machine (made even better if you know what you are doing). We had no problems installing. Printing is fast and the output is beautiful. We went from a tiny personal Minolta laser printer that had put in a few great years to this for a few reasons. The Minolta was having a few problems that I was sick of dealing with, I was tired of manually duplexing, and we really wanted an auto document fed scanner (ADF). Now I just need to find a program that can automatically OCR and index the documents...I didn't install the indexing software they included, so I guess I avoided that pitfall. I have had the SCX-4826fn a couple of months and love it. I haven't used the fax yet, but that's not what I bought it for. I bought it because it was the only laser ADF MFP with automatic duplexing in a reasonable price range! Nothing else even came close!I only have a
