By Chloe I purchased this all-in-one when my hp laser printer and all-in-one -- both of which had been running for at least 10 years -- died the same week. The 7780 seemed to offer all the features one could hope for in a single machine despite its cheesy build quality. I bought one at Staples which set up fine but then produced vertical streaks on print-outs. Thinking it was a bad machine, I exchanged it for another. That one wouldn't register commands on the front panel or do the preliminary setup. Another bad machine? Maybe. I then gave it a third chance and ordered one from Amazon which had dropped its price on the item by more than $100 in about a week. The one I received from Amazon wouldn't even start. I called hp tech service reps who first told me that the cartridges shipped with the machine are not good and that I would have to invest in a new set of cartridges (which I did) to see if the machine worked. When it didn't, I called them back and was told that there was nothing they could do except offer me another model. It's such a shame for a company like hp to lose it reputation over this and other machines which not only have the problems I encountered but others such as bad fax intakes, poor picture quality and internal programming that registers half-full ink tanks as empty so that one is forced to buy twice the amount of ink that he/she needs. It's the end of an era. This could have been a premier machine. Instead, it's junk. Don't buy it. 51 of 53 people found the following review helpful. Very Disappointing By K. M. Hastings I paid the $500 price tag for this printer because I needed a quality printer/scanner/copier for home office use that was durable, fast, wireless and Vista compatible. I even called HP prior to purchasing it, to confirm that the printer was compatible with Vista. The customer service rep. said it was. Wrong. Upon inserting the software disc that came with the printer, I immediately learned it was not compatible with Vista. 14 phone calls to Tech support and one month later I finally got software for the printer. However, I am on my second printer because the first one jammed repeatedly, printed crooked and dog-eared paper. After 1-1/2 weeks, the replacement printer is doing the same thing. What has been most disappointing about this product is the technical support. Call 5 times and you will get 5 different answers, 3 of which will be incomprehensible due to heavily accented technicians. All of HP's technical support is, apparently, provided from India. Some of the techs know what they're doing, some don't but pretend they do and others direct you to others to get you off the phone ("it's your McAfee Security - call them", "it's your router, call Linksys" - the problem was neither McAfee nor Linksys). I have a history of purchasing HP products but have never experienced any product that was so inferior and obviously not capable of performing as advertised. Shame on HP. 62 of 67 people found the following review helpful. Tray default and lock don't work as expected By Gary Myers I purchased the 7780 rather than the less expensive 7680 to take advantage of the 2nd, and larger, paper tray. The first tray holds 250 sheets, the second 350 sheets. My plan was to load the smaller, tray 1 with envelopes, letter head or photo paper, and the larger 2nd tray with ordinary paper. You can set either tray as the "default" tray or "lock" a tray to restrict printing to that locked tray. The idea is to prevent selecting a tray with letter head stationary when the stock paper tray runs out. The problem is that it doesn't work that way. With tray 1 locked and the optional 2nd tray set as "default", printing from the computer works fine, tray 2 is the source of paper. The problem occurs upon receipt of a fax or when copying a document from the device, it always prints to tray 1, which is "locked". HP support says

Tubesing I have been using this printer heavily for about three months. We are both teachers so we use it a lot to print mostly text documents. We use it on a network using the ethernet connection, and do not use the USB connection. Install/instructions: The installation of this printer will be easy if you're used to adding network printers. I was able to assign it an IP address easily and get it working without even looking at the instructions. The printer has a web page where you can adjust settings and so on, very easy to use. HOWEVER, to install the scanning functions was a totally different matter. That required the instruction book, which refers you to the electronic manual if you're doing a network install. The instructions are incomplete and leave out some XP settings you need to adjust in order to use it. I had to call tech support to resolve the issue, but it was relatively quick and painless. They really need to make the instructions for this process more complete. Print quality: Print quality is excellent. The one problem, one that you've probably heard about, is that it curls the output paper. For small jobs this doesn't tend to create issues other than the annoyance of your paper curling up at the ends. When printing ten pages or more though, they tend to fold over while outputting, thus jamming up the output tray and/or spilling papers on the floor. Sometimes this is just annoying, and sometimes it creates an internal paper jam. This gets to be a hassle when printing 30 copies of a 5-page test and the pages get all scrambled by the jam. This effect is always there, though certain kinds of paper seem to curl more than others. Scanning: There's a really frustrating problem with the scanner feature. It auto-detects the edge of your paper such that you can not scan a larger area than the paper occupies on the glass. At first it seems like that wouldn't be a problem, however the software forces a 1/8" blank margin around the image, which cuts off anything close to the edge of the paper. So if you have documents or photographs with important stuff close to the edge of the original, it will be lost and there's no way to compensate. You can't stretch the scan area, move the paper on the glass or anything else I've tried. You just have to give in to losing an eighth inch around the edges. Argh! Toner: On my first toner cartridge I got 2215 pages. Exactly 2215, and no more. Why does that matter? Because with most printers, when the toner gets low you can pull it out, rotate it a few times, put it back in and keep printing as long as you can tolerate the results. Not with this printer. Once it senses that the toner is low, it will never print another page from that cartridge. It displays a "toner low" message and refuses to print. This is especiallly irritating for a couple reasons. First, the pages still look perfect so I know there's more toner in there and I'd like to use it until the pages look bad. Second, if it's not a convenient time to run out of toner and you don't have the replacement standing by, you're not going to print a single page. You get NO warning, the printer just quits. This is unacceptable design in my opinion. When the pages start to look bad, I know the toner's low. I should be able to keep printing as long as I can tolerate the results. Unacceptable. [update 2/20/08: On later toner I have managed to remove the cartridge, rotate it to redistribute the toner inside, then put it back in the printer for a few more pages. Inevitably it does detect that toner is low and refuses to print until you repeat the process, but at least you can finish the print job without being stranded. This really is an unacceptable 'feature'. A warning that toner is low might be nice but refusing to print when the pages still look fine is just bullying us to waste money, and I

By Jack McLaren I rarely write reviews, but I have always used Amazon's site to preview products and read others' reviews that I decided it was time I gave back. So I purchased the Samsung Printer from another seller at $299.00, the price alone is worth 2 stars. Just a little about my purchase decisions....I've owned 20 printers since 1994; the first Canon color inkjet, BJC-600, and then the Epson Stylus, and now 20models later, the Samsung Color Laser CLX-3175 ... I never really thought I would buy a Samsung for a printer, usually I buy Epson or HP. Epson is better with inkjet and HP I feel is the King with laser technology. So...Why a Samsung....For 2 years I've been searching for a color all in one, it had to be laser, I was sick of the drying inks, I did not print much in full color but when I did, the tanks were empty or clogged. Until I saw the Samsung I decided on either the HP all in one, like the Color LaserJet CM1312mfp or the Color LaserJet 2820mfp. The size of those machines delayed the purchase, I didn't have the room for it so I figured I would wait until my older HP LaserJet 6p died and my Epson 980 needed a new cartridge. I was looking for a Plasma screen on Samsung's website and that's where my love affair began. Within 20 minutes I ordered it! It's probably the fastest purchase decision on an electronic device ever for me. I usually wait until I read a dozen reviews etc. . But the price had me thinking even if it's not what I expected, I would just sell it when it needs toner or, I could always give it to my mother as she needs an all in one as is not as picky as I am. Anyway back to the review, I ordered my printer on Thursday and received it on Monday. I unboxed the printer and it was already assembled with the cartridges preinstalled. The unit was nicely taped in all the spots that would come affixed during shipping. You only must install the arm for the ADF. Earlier that day, before I received the printer I went to Samsung's website and downloaded the drivers and software. Samsung did an extraordinary job with the software and drivers. The Printing software, The Scanner software, and the Printer Console software were all separate packages. So you did not have to install all three packages on all computers. Also, you have the option of installing a Mono printing software package, this is extremely valuable! This mean if you have children or co-workers who may waste your toner printing color documents, you can restrict them by only allowing them to print in black and white, and they wouldn't even know HAHA. The software is NOT bloated like HP software, the color drivers are less then 10mb and so are the Scanner drivers. The printer console software is about 80mb; this package is basically like a printer monitor and extended menus. Personally I did not find needing to install it since the entire Printer setup could be viewed by entering its IP number, web setup. I have to give this printer another star just because the drivers are simple, to the point and consists of less than 100mb and 20mb if that. System setup was simple! All I had to do was plug it in and connect the network cable as I use it over the network. I have setup my router set to use DHCP, so the TCP/IP settings are all done automatically. Assuming all your computers are configured properly. When you run the drivers the setup asks you if it's a local setup meaning USB or Networked, after that it automatically finds your printer by IP number. I choose to print a test page and 20 seconds later... a nicely printed demo printout. I was amazed. To test the copy quality I decided to copy it and compare. WOW that's all I can say, it took me 15 seconds to figure out which was the original, I purposely mixed them up. If it passed that test, then I knew it was a keeper! The next thing I did was setup the
