Hedges I recently bought my HP DeskJet 5150 as a replacement for an elderly HP inkjet printer that gave up the ghost. In general I have been very pleased with the 5150. It had flawless installation (I was ready to print ten minutes after I opened the box) and setup, and has excellent print characteristics in both B&W and color. It is very capable, starts up fast, has a quick throughput rate, and superior graphics resolution. I have framed a couple of color prints printed on the 5150 (on HP photo paper), as they are equal to conventional photographic printing to the naked eye. My only caveat on the photo printing is that I can't vouch for the life of the prints, so far so good, but I know that some inkjet prints fade badly over time. I am pretty hard on the 5150. Because I am in in the throes of researching and writing my Master's thesis right now, I am printing copious amounts, and running at least 500 pages a week through the 5150, and thus far have had no problems with it.The one minor and completely unanticipated, annoyance I have with the 5150 is the shelf that holds the printed sheets is too short. HP provides a rickety pull out/fold over contraption to help hold printed work, but in my experience it is inconvenient at best (it almost doubles the frontal area of the printer), and is a real space hog on my desk.Aside from that one small critique (which is the reason I gave it four instead of five stars) I think the HP 5150 is an excellent little printer at a bargain basement price. 40 of 42 people found the following review helpful. I'm very impressed, and am thinking about replacing my wheezing Epson 740 (which I've put probably 20,000 pages through.)Things that impressed me about it:--The box it comes in. It's not too big, and all the specs and technical info you need are printed on the outside. (And although others complain about it not having a USB cable and I don't have the box in front of me, I'm sure that it specifies that on the box itself. Besides, no USB cable has been an industry standard since USB printers first rolled off production lines.)--The size. For an inkjet printer, it's quite small. It can also be used in low overhead areas, since the paper tray is underneath the output tray. My Epson Stylus 740 is, for all practical purposes, 13" high and 5" deeper than it would otherwise be, because of the paper tray.--Software. Clark I have had Tektronics (now Xerox) printers before and got this for my home office based on the good experiences I had with their higher-end models. I couldn't believe the price, so I was skeptical about it. So far so good. Great print quality, reasonably quiet during start-up and printing and speedy enough for my needs. Very simple network configuration and setup. I have no way to confirm this, but it appears to be identical to the Samsung color laser at about the same price. Feature set is identical and so is physical appearance except for branding. Comes with full toners (not starters), which is different than the Samsung. Lots of replacement parts as printing levels get high, but this is pretty standard on color lasers. Would buy it again without hesitation. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. An excellent inexpensive network printer By Marcus L. Rowland I got one of these when they were heavily discounted a couple of years ago - I was originally just looking for a basic mono network printer, and was astonished when I saw a duplexing colour laser for about the same price. I've since picked up the 500-sheet second tray unit, again very cheaply. I've had no real problems with it once I'd figured out the installation. I'm using it on a mixed PC and Mac home network - PC installation is entirely straightforward, but Mac users should check Xerox's web site for installation instructions for OS-X 10.3 and above, the manual instructions are only correct up to 10.2 So far I've needed one change of toners, when the low capacity starter toners ran out, which was expensive (but no more so than any other colour laser) and has given me 18 months of service. While it is a little on the noisy side, and slow to start up, it makes up for that by being built like a tank and extremely reliable - I'd be surprised if I've had more than four or five paper jams. I use mine mostly for proofing mixed colour / text PDFs, and the duplexing ability is a godsend. I've also printed to labels and OHP transparency film, made coloured signs, etc. About the only negative I can think of is that it can't handle card, not even the thin card recommended for copiers. As someone else has pointed out, you need to access the front and two sides - normally everything can be done from the front, but clearing jams can involve the sides, and the manual paper feed is on the side. This might not be the best choice if price is no object - there are smaller, quieter and faster colour lasers - but it's very useful if you're on a budget and simply want a duplexing colour network laser that works, and works well. One thing to check before buying is the availability of toner and other consumables (the drum and transfer belt) - since this model is no longer made there's a possibility they will eventually be discontinued. By SFNative We have one of these at work. Well...two actually. I refuse to put the second one into service. We were offered one of these for free if we purchased a WorkCenter 35 Pro (another hunk of junk but don't get me started). Even for free, the Phaser 6100 is awful. It's terribly slow, the memory is not upgradeable, the footprint is far too big (that's because you need to be able to access it from three sides, which, WTF?), it has three separate consumables not counting the four toner cartridges and the quality is about as good as one of those $99 inkjet units from WalMart. After we got the first one, I swore never again but the boss had already purchased another WorkCenter 35. We've used the second Phaser just once. Fast But Expensive By RM At the time I purchased this color laser, it was the best of the home consumer color laser printers available. What sold me was its blazing speed for both B&W and color printing. I have since added a second paper tray devoted exclusively to envelopes. While it is certainly a professional machine, therein lies one of its major drawbacks, i.e., no single feed envelope feeder slot. You have to manually change the feeder configuration and the software preferences each and every time you print even a single envelope. Sometimes the software gets stuck and won't revert to letter feed, and I have to shut it off and reboot to get it to go back. This is a very expensive printer to operate. Adding options is very costly. The unit is now as large as a Volkswagon too. I have had it about 8 months and am down to 1/4 left on the toner (an average home user and not doing photo printing). To replace the four toner cartridges will cost as much as the entire printer cost. It is hard to find supplies because this is a rare printer on the US market. Konica Minolta seems to aim it at the overseas market. I wish when they sell it here they would support it as well. In the end, as in all high technology, I should have waited to get a newer model at half the size and half the cost. Zeigler I purchased this printer largely because of the great price, the large capacity toner cartridges and the reputation of Konica/Minolta. The print cartridges are expensive, do not print but about half of the 6000 projected page rate, and tend to develop print problems long before the toner is used up. Morgan I had a Canon BubbleJet BJC-4200 long ago, and after that printer I was very hesitant to even consider another Canon printer. When my most recent printer died, an HP DeskJet 970cse, I needed to find a good printer that could print duplex and produce quality output. After reading many, many reviews I decided to give Canon another chance. I am very glad that I did so. The Pixma iP4500 arrived in a huge box, and as it turns out it needed the space. This is a larger printer than I expected, and as a result I had to rearrange my desk to find room for it. That's a small oversight on my part. The printer itself is an unassuming-looking box of a machine, though it resembles more of a printer when the paper trays are populated. Setup was easy and straightforward, though I do recommend using the "getting started" insert before setting everything up. Though setting everything up is relatively self-explanatory, it is helpful to see the illustration of what to do in order before making the leap. Overall, setup took maybe 20-30 minutes once the parts were all out of the box and everything was set up. Once configured, installing the drivers is simple. Drop in the CD, follow the prompts, and turn on the printer at the right time. No fuss. Once set up and powered on, the printer is ready to go to work. I print a majority of my things in duplex mode so I tweaked the driver configuration to make it the default, after which the setting is more or less invisible. Everything in the driver configuration is very easy to find, straightforward, and simple. There are two ways to feed paper into the iP4500. There is a top-loader which is the default paper source and there is a front-loading paper tray ("cassette" according to Canon's documentation). Heavier papers such as card stock should be loaded from the top-loader. So, how does this printer perform? I'll break it down into two parts, speed and quality. Speed - this is a relatively fast printer! Feeding it a print job that conists of a two-sided black and white print this printer can churn out the pages, including the dry time for the front page, in about 20 seconds. Granted, this is my experience and your mileage may vary but it's a good starting point from which to base your evaluation of the speed. My previous printer would take at least a minute to print the very same documents, and it still couldn't keep up when in draft mode. For photo printing it churns out a full-page 8.5"x11" borderless photo in roughly 45 seconds. Quality - what good is speed without quality? This printer backs it up. The text and basic image quality is acceptable, though it could be a touch better. This is not noticeable in day-to-day print jobs. On photo printing, though, this printer is an absolute showstopper. The photos it prints, on photo paper, are better than most magazine prints and could easily be used for photo studio gallery shots. It would be nice if the printer actually had a USB cable in the box, but this is a small thing. Overall, this is a high-quiality, high-performance printer that is sure to please even the staunchest of critics. Not being expert in networked printers, I'd not be posting this review except for the fact that in researching this printer I found almost no posted reviews anywhere online. I figured my observations were better than none. Although I am a novice at installing and configuring a printer on a wired network, I followed the instructions (which were straightforward) and was able to set it up and get it working in under 20 minutes, with no problems at all. Print quality looks good, but (of course) pictures don't look nearly as good as on a photo inkjet printer. My tests in printing photos on the 3800dn, however, have been very simple -- printing at default settings on plain paper. Tweaking the paper or the settings might make the output more impressive. That said, the pictures showed no banding or streaking -- that is, no terrible flaws. Compared to a photo inkjet, they were pretty flat however (the use of plain papers is certainly partly responsible). I have tested the duplex feature on short documents. No problems so far. I also use the multipurpose tray for printing envelopes and checks. I have printed several so far with no paper jams. This is mildly noteworthy, because my old laserjet had begun to jam when I tried to print single checks (from an original set of three, two having already been used). This printer seems able to do the job without difficulty. Since my printing is infrequent by business standards, the printer spends most of its time in sleep mode, which makes it completely silent. Bringing it out of sleep mode does take a minute or so. When HP advertises nearly instant printing, they are not lying, but they are also assuming the printer in fired up and ready to go, not coming out of sleep mode. The noise it makes printing is about that typical of other laser printers I have used at home and at work. Every so often the thing calibrates itself, which makes a bit of noise. The noise is not all that loud, but if you are sitting next to the printer, as I am, and not expecting it, it can startle you. I am sure I will get used to it quickly enough, though. I haven't put it through printing a big job yet, so to some extent the jury is still out. So far, though, I have not been seized with buyer's remorse. I hope this helps someone. Follow up comments: I have discovered that the delay in printing is variable. If I ask the printer to print an envelope it takes it quite a while to fire up; printing a page of text the printer responds very quickly, even from sleep. When I posted my earlier comment I had confused the envelope printing delay with a delay awaking from sleep mode. Also, something (an electrical storm?) fried a crucial piece of the electronic innards, and I had to work with HP support to get it fixed. While I won't say my experience with HP support was absolutely wonderful, it exceeded my expectations. When I finally got a real person to talk to they were both smart and helpful. They even spoke and understood English...which is not a given in tech support any more. They figured out what failed and sent a replacement part under warranty. Excellent Printer, Although big By Franklin Wang This printer works great, the sleep mode helps save power by only consuming 15W when asleep. And it wakes up whenever a print job is sent to it within 12 seconds. The only issues I have with the printer is the cost of toner. To replace all 4 toner carts, you will end up having to spend at least 600.00 The good part about the toner is each cart is rated @6000 pages, so they last awhile. Does What it Promises...and Very Well...recommended By Amrit Tiwana This the third Brother laser printer I've purchased in the past seven years. This machine was a logical first choice based on my good experience with this brand. I've had this one for about four months and have put it to heavy use. Simply put, this machine does exactly what it promises and without any glitch. I used it with both my Mac and Windows XP PC at home; the software integrates well. Four other positives are worth mentioning: (1) the toner refills are inexpensive ($60 for the 7,000 page version), (2) they can be reliably refilled once each with the toner refill kits off of ebay ($12-16 each; not a messy process), (3) mine's not as loud as another reviewer's unit seemed to be (or maybe I'm used to the level of noise from Brother printers;), (4) The duplexing works very reliably (not a single jam since I bought this unit). Good, but some small issues By Kris Ganjam Pros: For $450, getting a fax + copier + scanner + duplex laser printer is a pretty good deal. I considered buying higher quality printer, scanner and fax-modem components separately and then using my computer to integrate them, but there is something to be said for "press-a-button" copying and faxing that just works. I've found a lot of unexpected uses for the copy machine - no longer need to tote the whole textbook; just copy the chapter I plan to read, etc. The N-in-1 feature is useful - you can fit many textbook pages onto a single sheet. The printer is completely quiet when idle, though it takes a few minutes to fan down after printing something. Cons: My biggest requirement in a printer was built-in duplex (double-sided printing). I couldn't find another laser duplex multifunction device for under $1000. (For those deciding, if black & white text print quality matters to you, do NOT buy an ink jet - or at least do a careful side-by-side print comparison. Laser is much better.) Anyway, I was pretty mad to find out that this printer only supports printing at 600 DPI duplex. There was absolutely no mention of this in the specs. There is a noticeable quality difference between 600 and the HQ1200 mode. Lots of jaggies in 600 dpi - almost looks like my old deskjet, though slightly better. It's still suitable for documents you'll just read over once. The other con is that this printer is darned ugly. When photocopying a textbook it is almost impossible not to accidentally press at least 10 of the over 50 buttons littering the front panel. It would have been nice if the cover was removable - I have had trouble scanning some textbooks that really aren't that large. My experience with Brother customer service was pretty bad - I had to literally wait 45 minutes on hold to speak to someone about the duplex issue. 25 of 26 people found the following review helpful. A Slick Machine.... By Jazzspielen After much research and some looking and testing, decided to go for this Brother machine based on reviews and my other good experiences with Brother equipment. Bought this at Costco for somewhere around $375. Set up was a breeze -- less than 30 minutes, and no problems with XP Pro. Networked it to my colleagues without problems. Works like a champ. Faxing is a breeze and sheet feeder is fast and well-designed. Copying is also slick. Printing has been fast with sharp text. Have not needed to scan anything yet. Toner save is a real plus for us b/c of the volume of faxes, copies, etc. that come through every day. Making command changes is a snap and pretty much intuitive. I thought the manual was very clearly written, and it's easy to find command changes you want. The size of the thing is a little intimidating -- I think it frightened away our other little inkjet, but I'm perfectly happy with it -- in fact, I think we got a steal on this thing. If you're
