Strickland After doing a lot of research for multi-function printers I selected this printer and love it! I wanted a laser since it's cheaper to maintain (no $$$ ink cartridges) and didn't really need color (since I have a very nice photo printer for the rare times I want to print in color). I love the duplex mode (double side printing) to save paper and it'll automatically print 'n' pages to one physical page which is also handy. I have it networked between my computer and my husband's so we both can use it. (DSL connection with separate Linksys router and DSL modem.) All wasn't 100% rosey at first.... I connected it via my network and it worked great but due to a problem using it while connected via VPN to my employer, I decided to use the USB connection (when I was on VPN I couldn't see the printer). I got all features working fine except for the scanning (it wouldn't scan at all). After reading so many bad reviews of Brother's tech support I was leary to call them but after many reinstalls w/o luck, I finally called them. The support folks were GREAT!! I ended up calling twice; one for help uninstalling the network drivers and again for a scanning problem. The second call I was on the phone for almost an hour and they found a patch (from Scansoft) to my original VPN problem as well as a registry patch (from Microsoft) for the USB scanning problem. The fix for the uninstall problem was because I had to log in as Administrator not just be in the admin group (I'm running Win2k) so that's why I couldn't completely switch from network connection to USB (the network drivers were still partially installed). In both calls, the tech support folks were helpful, pleasant, and knowledgeable. The only remaining problem is configuring the fax with an answering machine. The manual has a lot of info but their explanation of the features for the fax isn't all that clear. Right now I don't need the fax much so I'll wait a bit and call tech support back again later. I love this printer, I like that it has all the features I need in one nicely packaged unit, and for a change, I have good things to say about a company's tech support. (Every company says customers are number one, but only a tiny % actually mean it.) Other reviewers have complained about the included scanning software (Paperport 8.0 SE from Scansoft) but so far so good, it works ok for me. I haven't tried the OCR feature though but supposedly it'll let me scan pure-text documents for later edits (like in Word) as well as let me search for docments by providing words inside of the document (not just file name which isn't too useful). I ended up purchasing this printer at PCuniverse (free shipping and no sales tax) for the same price listed here. The reviews of the MFC 8840 printers in Amazon were a great help in selecting which printer to purchase. 47 of 48 people found the following review helpful. almost there for macs By Joshua Schwarz i bought this unit hoping it would replace my separate fax machine, printer & copier. for the most part i'm very impressed. the print quality is very good the fax machine is excellent and because it's a flatbed scanner, it's very easy to use it a photocopier as well. i'm have a mostly mac network and the printeing is fine from both os 9.2 and os 10.3 as well as win xp. the install software is a little barbaric in that it doesn't really let you know what it's installing or give you the option to install just some of the components, the software install directions were all but worthless, but anyone with some mac experience will figure it out. the installer worked ok and left a text file log of where it put things. one nice thing is that you don't have to use the brother printing extension (driver). it works fine with the standard apple laserwriter extention. however the brother drivers might be a little faster and they had some

More Compact Than Some Alternative Multifunction Models By Citizen John This 75 pound multifunction machine arrived quickly. It didn't come with the USB Cable that's required, a minor annoyance. The price was competitive and has dropped significantly since my purchase. Before ordering, I contacted the seller to confirm this is new, not a refurb. I had an immediate problem with the machine but not due to any fault of the machine. This machine ideally should be plugged into a wall outlet directly and not to a battery backup surge suppressor unit. Otherwise, it tends to turn itself off. However, it has a surge suppressor built into it. When you have problems such as this, you can use their offshore call center in Manila and benefit from their troubleshooting history. Manila is Zerox's 1st-level technical support. More on that below. Xerox is a big name in copiers, of course, and this model serves industrial needs yet should be complimented with a "workhorse printer." One can't expect a multifunction machine to be used as one's workhorse printer. A really good printer might last ten years and down the line the worry will be whether operating systems will support them. Multifunction machines last in good condition maybe half that long depending on how they're used. This Phaser 6128MFP/N reminds me a lot of much larger HP machines I've seen in offices except it's a lot more compact. The scan area is the max paper size: 8.5 x 14 in. This machine uses Paperport software. You can scan from your computer using this software and that's how I use it. The setup seemed easy except for not including the USB cable. But there was a twist to it and my experience will save you time. Initially, I believed the Phaser 6120MFP was not capable of using the feeder tray to scan multiple pages. My first call to Manila erroneously confirmed that, and I used the glass to manually replace page after page for multi-page scans. A recent call to Manila resulted in my being connected to the 2nd-level call center, which is in the U.S. The 2nd-level support assisted me in using the setup wizard to enable the machine to accept multi-page scans using the feeder tray. This machine can scan multiple pages using the feeder tray. Learning to use the software requires a little more than previous models, but the software is better. A scan can be done in varying resolution scales with the highest being truly great. It's amazing what you can do with this model once you learn how. Because of the ease and interface, you will control your scans from your PC. Great speed. Duplexer. LCD screen shows title of printing document. Ability to restrict who on the network can print in color. Printer administration from within computer software. Inexpensive, good value for money for small businesses. CONS: Would have given 4-stars but, the default Postscript PS3 driver does not print complex documents well (i.e. images and fonts). Images and MS Word Art fonts wont all print on simple 2+ page MS Publisher newsletters. Lexmark's Tech Support did not help. To fix it you'll need to download and install the PCL Emulation driver from Lexmark. You'll have to add the new driver from within the properties dialog box of the original PS3 driver. First download the PCL file for your OS; double click to extract it to your C: drive (note the locale); Open the properties dialog of the PS3 driver; select the Advanced tab and click the "New Driver" button; select "Have Disk" and navigate to extracted locale; follow remaining installation prompts. You should now be able to print large, complex documents. UPDATE 2008-APR-01: Dropping rating to 1-star Very high cost to own due to short toner life. Romeu Pros: Excellent print quality, duplesin, network connectivity Cons: Printer self calibrates every 2 hours; this is a huge waste of mechanical resources. Imagine self-calibrating 12 times a day 36 times a month. It is also annoying when the printer comes on for a few second to self-calibrate. Lexmark technical support was contacted several times by phone and email to receive the same answer, the printer self-calibrates and it cannot be change or adjusted. At this rate of wasteful cycles, the life of the printer will be shorter. The original cartridges ran out within three months; high price of replacements. 6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Beautiful job - but HUGE printing costs!!! By I. Cox I have owned this printer for all of 3500 pages, 95% of them normal text on normal paper. In that time I have gone through *2* black cartridges (nominally rated for 4000 pages EACH), and these suckers, at $100 or so, are NOT cheap. I also own a Dell 3100CN, and whatever its other faults, printing the same load it gets 30% MORE than the nominal capacity. My Dell may cost a penny or two per page. The Lexmark is a hefty multiple. Otherwise, it is a superb printer. It prints beautifully, handles different papers with ease, and has a fantastic and easy to use menu system. It also integrated with my network with no problem whatsoever. In terms of quality and speed this is the best printer I have ever seen. Bar NONE. But unless you do not care about your money, don't buy this printer. Heck, at this rate, even ink-jets look cost-effective. Lexmark clearly are taking advantage of their customers. By Chloe I purchased this all-in-one when my hp laser printer and all-in-one -- both of which had been running for at least 10 years -- died the same week. The 7780 seemed to offer all the features one could hope for in a single machine despite its cheesy build quality. I bought one at Staples which set up fine but then produced vertical streaks on print-outs. Thinking it was a bad machine, I exchanged it for another. That one wouldn't register commands on the front panel or do the preliminary setup. Another bad machine? Maybe. I then gave it a third chance and ordered one from Amazon which had dropped its price on the item by more than $100 in about a week. The one I received from Amazon wouldn't even start. I called hp tech service reps who first told me that the cartridges shipped with the machine are not good and that I would have to invest in a new set of cartridges (which I did) to see if the machine worked. When it didn't, I called them back and was told that there was nothing they could do except offer me another model. It's such a shame for a company like hp to lose it reputation over this and other machines which not only have the problems I encountered but others such as bad fax intakes, poor picture quality and internal programming that registers half-full ink tanks as empty so that one is forced to buy twice the amount of ink that he/she needs. Hastings I paid the $500 price tag for this printer because I needed a quality printer/scanner/copier for home office use that was durable, fast, wireless and Vista compatible. I even called HP prior to purchasing it, to confirm that the printer was compatible with Vista. The customer service rep. said it was. Wrong. Upon inserting the software disc that came with the printer, I immediately learned it was not compatible with Vista. 14 phone calls to Tech support and one month later I finally got software for the printer. However, I am on my second printer because the first one jammed repeatedly, printed crooked and dog-eared paper. After 1-1/2 weeks, the replacement printer is doing the same thing. What has been most disappointing about this product is the technical support. Call 5 times and you will get 5 different answers, 3 of which will be incomprehensible due to heavily accented technicians. All of HP's technical support is, apparently, provided from India. Some of the techs know what they're doing, some don't but pretend they do and others direct you to others to get you off the phone ("it's your McAfee Security - call them", "it's your router, call Linksys" - the problem was neither McAfee nor Linksys). I have a history of purchasing HP products but have never experienced any product that was so inferior and obviously not capable of performing as advertised. Tray default and lock don't work as expected By Gary Myers I purchased the 7780 rather than the less expensive 7680 to take advantage of the 2nd, and larger, paper tray. The first tray holds 250 sheets, the second 350 sheets. My plan was to load the smaller, tray 1 with envelopes, letter head or photo paper, and the larger 2nd tray with ordinary paper. You can set either tray as the "default" tray or "lock" a tray to restrict printing to that locked tray. The idea is to prevent selecting a tray with letter head stationary when the stock paper tray runs out. The problem is that it doesn't work that way. With tray 1 locked and the optional 2nd tray set as "default", printing from the computer works fine, tray 2 is the source of paper. The problem occurs upon receipt of a fax or when copying a document from the device, it always prints to tray 1, which is "locked". HP support says
