The best customer feedback 160 of 167 people found the following review helpful. Good for Windows users. Not so good for Mac users By Kevin Nicholls For comparison, I have an inkjet Canon PIXMA MX870 multifunction wireless connectivity I am using as a reference point in the workforce Epson 840, since they are competing products in the same segment. While Epson promotes the amount of space saved on the desktop 840, the space has not disappeared, it was simply increased. The 840 is surprisingly high. So much so that its use in an enclosed space can be difficult. Out of the box, I realized that the unit feel a little weak. Aside from the flatbed scanner, all from the ADF tray to the paper trays as if they had felt the pressure, without much force. The very simple configuration, it is unlikely that buyers who need to look at the setup poster to start. Take the tape, the fall of cartridges and turn it on again. The menu system is quite logical, and get the printer to my wireless network for about a minute in a minor quibble train on this one: they want 840 for up to five minutes to calibrate itself when you switch to use initially, and disables menu in the process. The scoreboard was surprisingly sharp, when the touch sensitive areas is not consistently register receipt. On both sides of the color LCD, you have a series of touch-sensitive "buttons" that light up when they are relevant to the context menu. It was good for most things were some of the icons a bit cryptic in context. Overall I found the interface to be a little on the gimmicky side, and would have preferred to have a few soft keys instead. Printing is everything you expect from Epson. The text was very sharp boundaries for "cheap laser" quality images and so incredibly well on the "cheapest you can get me" copy paper. Without question, the 840 kicks out crisp black text faster than any other printer I have used. But .. Mixed content is not nearly as fast. A good example is the built-in ability to ruled paper and graph paper print. The function is pretty cool, but ruled a page takes a painful time. A major peculiarity is the way to deal with selected Epson paper. They tout the upper pattern is versatile enough for any paper or envelopes less than 11 x 17 deal you can imagine, and that the bottom of the cartridge have a whole stack of paper. That's good. The problem is, expected 840 binding in the top drawer and there is no way to set globally for use in the lower cartridge. Yes, you can set the cartridge 2 to be used in the driver ... if you have a Mac. If you use a Mac, some programs you can change the settings for Paper (pack and cartridge 2 at a time), but some programs do not. In Windows, if you in a workgroup, each computer driver set to "large" pattern. If you have a Mac, this is not where the pain ends Scanning is fairly quick for an all-in-one and also a very average quality. I want a stack of paper into the feeder and they are scanned into the computer? No problem. Hit "Scan", "Scan to PC" and select the network computer. Unless you have a Mac While multifunction printers Canon has been able to do this for years, Epson can not scan the network for Macs with Leopard. Just to be sure, I have the latest drivers from the Epson website, without success. For Windows users, the 840 employees is a multifunction inkjet solid. The materials are too fragile to use workgroup sustained, but it's certainly good for an office user who would like to reinforce the distinctive look of the Epson printer. For Mac users, though, I really can not recommend it. The drivers are not good, and you lose the functionality of the box. Updated Mac OS Lion - August 2011: For this application, I use the printer on a clean install Lion for something more than a week
